Its members have extensive experience in matters relating to shipping and commodities contracts in the civil and criminal courts, arbitrations, inquiries and other tribunals in the UK and overseas. It has highly regarded specialists including international trade and commodities specialist Vasanti Selvaratnam QC, who acted for a respondent Malaysian Bank in Deutsche Bank AG v CIMB Bank Berhad, which concerned discrepancies in documents in a commodity transaction. 36 Family: Members of the family team are organised into practice sub-groups specialising in all aspects of family law, including Matrimonial Finance, TOLATA, Private & Public Children Law (including Modern Families). 36 Public Law & Human Rights: Members of the public law team have a reputation for dedication and professionalism, specialising in the following practice groups, Business and Private Immigration (including Nationality & Asylum), Employment (Employees’ rights and Unions), Education, Housing, Human Rights and Judicial Review. The set

St Philips Chambers is a leading set of commercial barristers based in London, Birmingham, Leeds and Singapore. They offer a great breadth and depth of legal expertise and arbitration experience and are able to offer legal assistance based on in-depth knowledge of a wide number of different business and industry sectors.

St Philips Stone is the domestic and international commercial dispute resolution team of St Philips Chambers. St Philips Stone has specialist teams in the following areas: ADR, banking and finance, commercial and chancery litigation, commercial fraud and asset tracing, commodities, company and partnership, construction and infrastructure, contentious wills, trusts and probate, energy and resources, insolvency, insurance and reinsurance, international arbitration, intellectual property, private international law, professional liability, real estate, restraint of trade and confidentiality, road, rail and air transport, and shipping and international trade (SITA).

In 2013, St Philips Chambers Singapore opened to service their Asia-Pacific clients. The set is fully committed to the Asia-Pacific region and has barristers based in Hong Kong, Brunei and Australia.

St Philips Chambers is also home to a number of mediators and arbitrators, many of whom are appointed to international panels of arbitrators such as SIAC, HKIAC, SCMA and KLRCA.

Areas of practice

The set has experience in dealing with a wide range of commercial matters, both contentious and non-contentious and is able to offer clients in-depth knowledge in a number of different business and industry sectors such as energy and construction, insurance, commodities, finance and shipping.

The set’s barristers appear in the English courts, arbitral tribunals and are also able to appear in foreign courts in other jurisdictions when specially licensed to do so. The set routinely acts in a wide range of institutional and ad hoc international arbitrations as advocates and/or as arbitrators. They also act in mediations and as mediators.
