Diversity & CSR:
The 36 Group is one of the most diverse sets in the Bar.
The 36 Group is firmly committed to the principles of Equal Opportunities and Diversity and makes every effort to provide a workplace with equal opportunities for everyone, where everyone should be treated with dignity and respect. Chambers makes every effort to ensure our policies reflect the relevant legislative framework provided by Parliament and to comply with the Equality and Diversity Code for the Bar.
Chambers will not discriminate, or permit discrimination, directly or indirectly on grounds of gender, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, marital or civil partner status, pregnancy, race, colour, ethnic or national origin, nationality, citizenship, disability, religion or belief, political persuasion, trade union membership, the fact that they are a part–time worker or a fixed–term employee or age. Chambers’ policy covers the provision of legal services to our clients, our staff relationships, and our relationships with each other.
Chambers has a written equal opportunities and diversity policy, which is provided upon joining Chambers. Each pupil, member of staff and of Chambers is encouraged to obtain a copy from one of the equal opportunities officers and to read it.
Staff and members receive training on equal opportunities and diversity and the aim of the Equal Opportunities Committee is to ensure equal opportunities and diversity form a part of all aspects of Chambers work and practice.
Through our policies we seek to ensure equality of access to all applicants; equality of treatment to all pupils, barristers and staff; equality of service to all professional and lay clients.
The Bar Standards Board (BSB) requires barristers’ chambers and BSB entities to collect and publish diversity data every three years at a minimum. This obligation is included in the BSB Handbook and emphasises the promotion of diversity and equality within the legal profession.
Per the requirements of the BSB Handbook, completion of the survey is voluntary and participants are able to opt out of having their data included in this publication.
In instances where a participant identifies themselves as belonging to a minority reported group, i.e. where the total number of respondents identifying themselves as belonging to a particularly characteristic or group is 10 or less and not all individuals have provided permission for their minority data to be published, the characteristic or minority group has been excluded from this publication.
All data in this publication has been anonymised and can be viewed here.
Education & Outreach is equally important at the 36 Group. It has run a ground-breaking advocacy competition for final year degree. The students are judged wholly on their 3 minute video submissions with the top 4 candidates receiving a mini pupillage. It has an outreach programme for schools and colleges where members of chambers & staff talk with state-educated students about careers in law as a barrister, clerk or administrator.
The 36 Group members & staff also undertake a great number of charitable endeavours, environmental and community initiatives including donating their time as board members of a variety of well-known charities to raise £millions for worthy causes.
In January 2025, 36 Family announced its upcoming monthly charity webinar series throughout 2025. Expert speakers from Chambers discuss a variety of topics across family law. Each session is designed to share expert knowledge, foster professional development, and contribute to a charitable cause. Seminar topics and speakers are announced monthly on the 36 Family LinkedIn page.
This webinar series is free of charge and open to legal professionals, academics and anyone with an interest in family law. The 36 Group donates £1 per attendee to a charity of the speakers’ choice, which will be calculated and announced at the conclusion of the webinar.
36 Stone also collaborate with 36 Family and have launched a similar initiative of the Charity Seminar Series: 12 Months of 36.
Every month throughout 2025, one of our expert barristers at 36 Stone host a topical seminar from our core areas of Commercial Litigation, Shipping, and International Arbitration.
