Tax Tier 3

The well-reputed tax practice at Allende Bascuñán & Cía is particularly noted for its advice on complex matters such as business reorganisations and associated asset sales on behalf of investment groups, as well as for representing clients before the administrative and judicial tax authorities and courts. The practice also houses a sizeable and impressive high-net-worth-families sub-practice. Largely responsible for developing the firm's tax capabilities, Francisco Javier Allende has over 30 years' tax advisory experience leads the department in conjunction with exerienced of counsel Carolina Gazitúa S. Senior associate Michael Camus D is the key contact for contentious tax matters, with associate Mario Donoso (a 2018-arrival from Garnham Abogados) provides valuable support. However, in March the practice saw the departure of former practice co-head Gonzalo Garfias, along with associates Andres Bustos and Pablo Ibánez , to establish Garfías & Cía. The firm has responded promptly, hiring Mauricio Carloza Carmona, formerly an international tax and M&A manager at Deloitte Legal Chile, in September 2020.

Other key lawyers:

What makes them unique is their technical knowledge and longstanding experience.’

They work as a team and it shows. They are very professional and listen to the real needs that one has as a client. At the same time they know how to make their problems very much their own. I really like them because they personalise the attention to the extreme and are always involved. At the same time, they have shown great capacity for ingenious solutions in countless areas.

I have had a very good experience with the firm. They are  great for speed and certainty in the answers to queries.’

Francisco Javier Allende’s qualities are his extensive knowledge of the subject and the ability to find special solutions to unusual problems. His approach gives a lot of confidence. He and Gonzalo Garfias have two extraordinary qualities that are rarely seen in the industry – they are trained to an extremely high level and have the highest criteria when looking at issues from a broad perspective.

Of the associates, I have an outstanding opinion of Andrés Bustos. I have full confidence in his performance and especially in his professional judgement.

Longstanding former partner Alejandro Romero moved to McKay y Cía. as of counsel in 2019.

It is a team of very professional, informed people who have given us the information on time and in a responsible manner. This has generated a relationship of trust with them.

They are agile, strong in specific knowledge and practical experience, have very good strategic ability, and fully follow up on the issues. They are also transparent when reporting on the state of affairs, risks and opportunities,  prepare very well for meetings and show versatility without losing quality.

The firm’s advice on administrative law has been highly professional, specialised and effective in its results.

Senior associate José Alberto Allende has been outstanding, supporting us in complex litigation; he has been able masterfully to handle all the technical aspects of the case, analyse all possible scenarios, anticipate the facts, define the best strategy to face the trial, and finally achieve a very convenient agreement with the other party. He has been of great support to us in a rather complex litigation that was very financially difficult. Having reached an agreement with the plaintiffs was a really important milestone for us.

The advice is always highly qualified, specialised and committed. In our opinion, what differentiates the labour advice provided by this firm is the timeliness and efficiency of the responses.

The firm’s work is exceptional. It is always proactive, especially when there are regulatory changes. I have felt that the client’s interests are a priority.

The plus of this firm is its knowledge and proactivity approach towards labour issues. Communication is fluid and ongoing with the partners and the difference with other firms is that the conversation is direct and it has the diversity of resources to face multidisciplinary issues. More importantly, these lawyers know how to detect when a topic requires external analysis, which gives a lot of confidence.

Andrés Garrido is committed, solid and efficient.

Corporate and M&A Tier 5

Allende Bascuñán & Cía fields an 11-lawyer team which, on the transactional front, has been particularly active in the mining, aviation, construction, technology, agriculture and real estate sectors. Experienced senior partner (and aviation expert) Felipe Allende and younger partner José Luis Ibáñez co-head the corporate practice.

This is a very well prepared, experienced and customer-focused team.

They are rated for knowledge, reliability, experience, availability and quick answers.

I think they have a very personal approach to the challenges of each company. They don’t stick to the usual answers and combine the different skills of their lawyers very well in every meeting.

José Luis Ibáñez is a lawyer with a scarce quality: empathy. He has great capacity for listening as well as analysis, and this allows him to understand the more general challenges of companies and to resolve particular challenges. He delivers a strong corporate vision along with systemic problem solving.
