Arias > The Legal 500 Rankings
Banking and finance Tier 1The eight-strong banking, finance and insurance team at Arias handles complex matters across the region, including traditional loans, syndicated loans, capital markets and local issues. Practice head Zygmunt Brett and highly-regarded associate Mariana Nóchez assisted private-investment promotion agency Proparco in two recent highlights, namely granting a $15m loan to Banco Promerica for SME financing, and assisting the same institution, as part of a senior lender syndicate which also included Dutch development bank FMO, the Inter-American Investment Corporation (IIC) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), in a loan agreement to Capella Solar for a solar photovoltaic power plant. Post publication, in December 2019, Brett, Nóchez and associate Antonella Imbers departed the firm, subsequently joining BLP in mid-February 2020.
Corporate and M&A Tier 1
The corporate and M&A team, which makes 'the most complex transactions look easy', is the largest department of the 'very reliable and trusted' Arias in El Salvador. Lilian Arias leads the practice, which has recently secured a number of new clients, such as Invenergy, Grupo Rudelman and Trina Solar. Key team members Luisa Rivas and associate Adán Araujo provided advice to Proyecto La Trinidad on the execution of a loan agreement with the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC), to be used to develop, construct and operate a solar power project. The firm also acted as local counsel to Telefónica in the regional sale of the firm's Central American operations. Furthermore, 2018 saw the arrival of Maximiliano Pimentel from Bufete A&A Lex and Javier Aguilar from an in-house role at IDB Invest. Co-managing partner of the El Salvador office Roberta Gallardo is also a key contact.
Dispute resolution Tier 1
Arias' dispute resolution practice acts for companies from a number of sectors, such as banking, retail, energy and pharmaceuticals. Jaime Rodríguez and practice head Eduardo Ángel successfully represented multinational retailer Walmart before the Civil Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice in a civil liability complaint of over $12m related to the harmful effects of a fire which originated in one of the client's warehouses. Associate Fernando Montano is another name to note. The department's impressive client roster also includes Citibank, Banco Davivienda, Dell and FedEx.
Intellectual property Tier 2
The five-strong IP department at Arias, which is praised by clients for being 'engaged with the company', regularly acts for clients from the fashion industry: experienced practice head Morena Zavaleta recently advised Longchamp on the protection of its world-famous "Le Pliage" bag design. In another work highlight, she filed an opposition against a trade mark application infringing two trade marks of the firm's client Grupo Inditex. The team also handles trade mark applications; for instance, associate Marcela Canjura filed 38 trade mark applications for Rigo Trading (Haribo Group).
