A partner in the Hogan Lovells International Arbitration team based in London, Ben Hornan represents clients on complex, high value, cross-border disputes. Ben focuses especially on the oil and gas, mining and natural resources, and financial services industry sectors but also has experience of handling disputes in a range of other sectors – from aviation to life-sciences. Ben also has particular experience of disputes involving Russia, Ukraine and the CIS region, as well as Africa and Asia.
Over the years, Ben has handled numerous arbitration proceedings under the LCIA, ICC, SIAC, HKIAC, UNCITRAL, LMAA and other sets of arbitral rules. This has included arbitrations seated not only in London but in several other jurisdictions too – from Singapore to Istanbul.
Ben has also been involved in national court proceedings in relation to all aspects of the arbitration process – including jurisdiction challenges, applications for injunctions, and the enforcement of awards – in several jurisdictions including England, Cyprus, the Cayman Islands and the British Virgin Islands.
An experienced advocate, Ben conducts advocacy and cross-examination at all stages of the arbitration process. Ben also has full rights of audience for civil matters at all levels of the English courts.
Ben is known for being hard-working, determined and highly commercial. He comes recommended by Legal 500 (2019 and 2020 editions) as having ‘real arbitration experience and expertise’, and for being an ‘excellent’ oil and gas lawyer.
