The firm: BCR Law was formed on 1 January 2016. The firm draws on the experience of six partners and 41 staff, including 28 fee-earners who cover a wide range of contentious and non-contentious practice areas.
The firm focuses on litigation, dispute resolution and corporate and commercial work, also specialising in offshore trust matters, planning and property disputes and high-value medical/professional negligence and personal injury claims, as well as family law. Its thriving corporate and commercial practice provides specialist advice in company law, business law, employment law, and commercial property.

Types of work undertaken: Corporate and Commercial: the firm’s C&C team advises on all aspects of commercial law, including company formations, joint venture and shareholder agreements and sale and purchase agreements. The team similarly advises on licence applications upon establishing new businesses in Jersey, and provides other specialist assistance in the fields of employment law, data protection and property advice. It has a particular specialism in competition law.
Personal injury and clinical negligence: the firm is the first choice law firm for insurance-related work in Jersey, building on its long-standing reputation for acting in high-value claims. In 2018, BCR Law acted for the Plaintiffs in the highest value negligence claim in the British Isles, valued at £140m. Clients also include the Medical Defence Union, the Dental Defence Union, Royal & Sun Alliance, Jersey’s Minister for Health, the Insurance Corporation of the Channel Islands, Aviva, and Ageas. It also acts for plaintiffs, usually in catastrophic personal injury claims.
Contentious trusts: trust disputes are one of the firm’s core disciplines. It acts for trustees, their insurers and beneficiaries in contentious trust matters, including breach of trust cases and where trustees require court directions.
Contentious property and planning matters: the firm has expertise in contentious property law. It has appeared in many of the leading cases in this area, especially concerning rights between neighbours and co-owners. Its lawyers act for public authorities, developers and private clients in a wide range of disputes up to the Court of Appeal. In planning matters, its advocates have appeared in numerous significant cases before the Royal Court concerning some of the largest developments in Jersey.
Professional negligence: the firm acts in professional negligence claims involving lawyers, accountants, financial advisers and construction professionals. It also specialises in advising professionals in disciplinary matters, including appearing for doctors at the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service.
Employment: the firm advises on a range of contentious and non-contentious employment and discrimination law issues, from drafting contracts and resolving disciplinary matters, to termination of employment and validity and effect of restrictive covenants in employment agreements.
Family: the family law team undertakes divorce and ‘big money’ ancillary work. It also advises on public children law, adoption and nuptial settlements.
