Career
Álvaro Mendiola has over 26 years’ experience as a senior legal advisor in jurisdictional proceedings and international and national arbitrations following the rules of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in Paris, the Permanent Court of Arbitration at the Hague, the Civil and Commercial Arbitration Court (CIMA), the Arbitration Court of the Madrid Chamber of Commerce, the Arbitration Board of Barcelona, and ad hoc arbitration boards.
In 2015, he became a CEDR accredited mediator (Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution) and, in 2020, he became an accredited mediator by the Ministry of Justice in Spain. He is on the panel of mediators at the Fide Mediation Center.
He participated in the restructuring processes of six of the most important automotive distribution networks in Spain and, for many years, he represented leading companies in the energy sector (gas, electricity and renewable energies) regarding settling their contractual disputes, as well as advising on business cooperation agreements, and agreements for the sale of companies and of strategic assets in other sectors.
He has led important cases related to competition law and unfair competition in the Spanish courts and was the first senior legal advisor in Spain to obtain a civil judgment awarding damages for breach of competition law (ruling of Madrid Commercial Court No. 5, November 11, 2005).
He has been lecturing in the Master for Admission to the Practice of Law, the Master in Business Law and the Master in Tax Consultancy at Universidad de Navarra in Madrid since 2017.
He has lectured on European Community law in the masters in business law at Universidad de Navarra and Universidad Antonio de Nebrija in Madrid, and on procedural practice in the Master for Admission to the Practice of Law at Universidad Complutense de Madrid (2013-2017).
