It has been reported that Malta's ship registry saw a growth of 13.6% in 2013, which translates into over six million gross tonnes being registered. The registration of super yachts (yachts over 24M in length) alone represented an increase of 18.1% over the previous year.
It has also been reported that 2013 was also a landmark year during which Malta continued to consolidate its position on the white list of both the Paris and Tokyo Memoranda of Understanding. Both Memoranda are aimed at harmonising the inspections on foreign flagged ships when calling at different ports. Their scope is to increase safety on board vessels and to protect the marine environment.
