Deloitte Legal has ‘vast experience’ and the team strength to handle complex tax matters including transactions, indirect taxes and litigation. Practice head Brian Leonard has expertise advising Spanish companies and foreign multinationals on tax planning and control. Also notable in the team is Jose María Gómez Rosende, who is an expert in the tax structuring of corporate M&A transactions and has ‘a broad vision and ability to go beyond classical tax topics’. The group advised waste-to-energy company Urbaser on tax issues relating to the sale of the company to Chinese-owned Firion Investments, and assisted FTSE 250 company Contour Global with the tax matters arising from its approximately €1.1bn acquisition of Acciona’s thermo and solar energy portfolio.

EY Abogados

EY Abogados works across the board in the tax space, with particular expertise in transfer pricing and multi-jurisdictional issues. Federico Linares leads a large and experienced practice that includes financial services sector specialist Araceli Sáenz de Navarrete and notable tax arbitrator Ramón Palacín. The team was further strengthened by the arrivals of José Antonio García Bañuelos, who joined from the State Treasury, and Francisco Palomino, who arrived from KLB Group. In recent highlights, the firm is advising Repsol on the potential impact of tax reform in the US, and is assisting CaixaBank with issues relating to its global expansion. Other clients include BBVA, Indra and Springwater Capital.

KPMG Abogados

Corporate tax expert Alberto Estrelles leads the KPMG Abogados practice, which covers the full spectrum of tax issues, including litigation and inspections. The firm also specialises in customs and excise taxes as well as indirect tax planning. Notable in the experienced team is tax litigation specialist Julio Cesar García, who is also active in domestic and cross-border cases. Adding further strength to the bench is Rufino de la Rosa, who focuses on indirect tax and joined from the tax authorities in 2018. The department advised Allianz Capital Partners on tax issues arising from its acquisition of a 20% stake in the gas distribution business of Gas Natural Fenosa. Other clients include Telefónica, Banco Santander and Santa Lucia.

PwC Tax & Legal Services

PricewaterhouseCoopers Legal acts in the full range of tax matters, with a particular expertise in disputes. Key names in the team are indirect tax and litigation expert Alberto MonrealJavier González Carcedo, who leads the firm’s transfer pricing group; and transactional specialist David Ramírez, who is experienced in working for clients in the financial services and industrial sectors. The firm is assisting EulaLink with tax structuring relating to a submarine cable that will link Europe to Latin America. In other highlights, the department advised King Street Capital Management on a joint venture takeover of Moove Cars, and assisted Bain Capital Credit with tax issues arising from its takeover of Spanish real estate developer Habitat.
