Career

Daniel M. Goldberg is Chair of the Privacy & Data Security Group and Co-Chair of the Advertising Technology Group. He is consistently recognized as one of the top U.S. privacy lawyers and uses his considerable experience to help clients navigate the rapidly changing privacy landscape.

Mr. Goldberg provides strategic advice on all matters involving data – from collection and monetization to storage and security. He helps companies comply with federal and state data protection and privacy laws, including the Federal Trade Commission Act (FTC Act), WPA-style state laws (such as Connecticut, Colorado, Indiana, Iowa, Montana, Tennessee, Virginia, and Utah), and Washington’s My Health My Data Act. Based in Los Angeles, he is specifically considered a thought leader in California law, actively working with companies to interpret and address obligations under the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA) and the upcoming Age-Appropriate Design Code (AADC), effective July 2024.

As part of his strategic role, Mr. Goldberg collaborates with business, marketing, and engineering teams to understand company data flows, develop data governance programs and policies, and harmonize practices across jurisdictions. He also conducts training for senior leadership and corporate boards. He helps companies assess and mitigate risks that arise from proposed projects and products, including relating to sensitive datasets (such as precise location data, health data, and children’s data) and emerging technologies (such as facial detection/recognition and AI), balancing the benefits to the company and consumers against possible negative impacts and material detriment. He emphasizes the importance of thoughtful analysis and processing data consistent with the reasonable expectation of consumers.

Mr. Goldberg has special expertise in advertising technology and technology transactions. He routinely negotiates complex deals on behalf of top advertisers, publishers, agencies, and technology providers involving media buys, programmatic advertising, customer matching, data clean rooms, and data licensing. He has an in-depth understanding of platform requirements, including Apple’s App Tracking Transparency (ATT). He is highly involved with ad tech industry efforts to address contractual, accountability, and opt-out obligations, including through working closely with the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB). He also serves as a Vice President on the Board of Directors for the International Advertising Association (IAA) and helped IAA and the Global Advertising Lawyers Alliance (GALA) publish the first-ever global guide on the impact of privacy laws on marketing and advertising.

Mr. Goldberg frequently shares insights about CPRA and other data protection and privacy laws on the Firm’s Technology Law Updates blog. He often speaks at conferences and programs, including those organized by the Association of National Advertisers (ANA), the Brand Activation Association (BAA), the Beverly Hills Bar Association (BHBA), the California Lawyers Association (CLA), the Children’s Advertising Review Unit (CARU), the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB), GALA, IAA, IAB, the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP), the LA County Bar Association (LACBA), the Media Law Resource Center (MLRC), Social Media Week (SMW), South by Southwest (SXSW), TechGC, and many others. He guest lectures at top universities, including University of Southern California (USC) and New York University (NYU), and takes on leadership roles for various organizations, including as a Member of the Ad Tech Committee for the Privacy Law Section of CLA, Founding Member and Co-Chair of the MLRC Data Privacy Committee, Founding Member of the Privacy/Cyber Section of LACBA, former KnowledgeNet Co-Chair for the Los Angeles Chapter of IAPP, and Founding Member and Former Chair of the USC Alumni Entrepreneurs Network.

Prior to joining the Firm, Mr. Goldberg worked at BakerHostetler and Bryan Cave, where he litigated in federal and state courts. He also helped launch a fintech startup, which was acquired by a multi-national corporation. Mr. Goldberg combines his litigation roots, technical understanding of and passion for technology, and insider’s perspective on entrepreneurship to deliver practical and cost-effective representation for his clients.

Mr. Goldberg is a graduate of UCLA and USC School of Law. He is certified as an Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/US) and admitted to practice in California.
