Career

Matt is an investment funds and regulatory specialist. He has extensive experience advising a range of sponsors and service providers across all aspects of a fund’s lifecycle and related regulatory and corporate matters, and on co-investment, joint venture and carry structures. He is part of Ogier’s Technology and Web3 sector group and also specialises in Islamic Finance.

Matt has more than 15 years’ experience in the Jersey funds industry, including over a decade within another leading law firm. During this time, he has worked on some of the largest European private equity fund closings as well as first-time fund launches for new sponsors. He has managed numerous complex transactions, often requiring innovative solutions.

With the benefit of experience in fund administration, Matt brings a pragmatic and practical approach to his advice. He understands the needs of sponsors and service providers alike and uses this insight to achieve the best outcomes for clients.

Matt is a graduate of the University of Bristol, and passed the Graduate Diploma in Law with BPP Law School. He was sworn in as a solicitor in Jersey in 2014, before being called to the Bar in 2019. In 2022, he completed the CISI Islamic Finance Qualification.

He regularly presents to clients, intermediaries and industry, and has contributed to working groups on legislative changes. He has a particular interest in ESG matters, and is part of the inaugural #BuildBackBetter cohort, an initiative for the development of sustainable finance leaders in Jersey. He also has an interest in Islamic Finance and Shariah-compliant structures.

Matt is part of Ogier’s multi-disciplinary Private Equity team.

Ogier‘s practice spans the breadth of fund structures and asset classes, with growing strength in digital asset management structures, in addition to private equity, hedge, infrastructure and real estate funds. In addition to assisting with the launch and structuring of Jersey-domiciled and listed funds, the practice also handles contentious and non-contentious regulatory issues. Niamh Lalor heads up the team, focusing on funds regulation in the private equity, venture capital and infrastructure sectors. Emily Haithwaite advises on the formation, listing and winding up of private equity funds, while Sophie Reguengo assists real estate funds with capital raising, acquisitions and disposals.
