Cleaver Fulton Rankin’s private client team handles a broad range of issues, from administration of high-value trusts, to disputes in relation to wills and estates, and related tax issues. The firm regularly handles matters in the multimillion-pound range for a range of high-net-wealth clients, including local business owners, and manages a number of trusts, both private and charitable, and also advise its charity clients on estate administration issues. Recent work includes providing cross-border tax advice concerning outright gifts and gifts in trust made by high-net-wealth clients with children living in different jurisdictions Michael Graham leads the team, which includes Jonathan Forrester, who is best known for his contentious probate and trusts litigation expertise, and William Cross, who is an established family practitioner and heads the family team.

Elliott Duffy Garrett is home to ‘an outstanding private client team; one of the best in Northern Ireland’. The group works for a range of clients including high-net-wealth individuals and particularly vulnerable clients. Recent cases have concerned complex administration cases which involved insolvency and foreign assets, as well as contested powers of enduring attorney. Established practitioner Stewart Nash leads the team, which includes associate Neil Mulholland, who is praised for his ‘meticulous attention to detail and holistic view of client requirements’. The ‘professional and efficient team’ at Millar McCall Wylie LLP has ‘great depth of knowledge and is able to get outcomes that clients are happy with’. The team is best known for handling wills and the administration of estates, many of which have considerable foreign assets. Another area of expertise is the administration of trusts and HMRC tax investigations. Clients range from high-net-wealth individuals to vulnerable clients. Practice head Conor Wylie has ‘exceptional knowledge, particularly in probate and trusts’.

Arthur Cox Belfast handles private client matters for high-profile individuals, including advising on the administration of estates and the creation of trusts. Many cases involve assets in numerous jurisdictions, as well as considerable probate matters. Corporate lawyers Alan Taylor and Lynsey Mallon are the key names to note.

Carson McDowell’s private client team acts on high-value estate planning for high-net-wealth clients, often in the multimillion-pound range. It has an extensive track record acting for trustees in a number of high-profile trust administrations. The firm is also able to leverage its corporate client base to handle the personal tax matters for high-net-wealth and ultra-high-net-wealth individuals associated with those companies. In addition to providing non-contentious tax advice, the firm also handles contentious estate matters, often concerning financial provision claims under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) (NI) Order 1979. Neil Bleakley leads the practice, which includes Fiona Wallace.

Gerard Small leads the team at John McKee Solicitors and focuses on representing high-net-wealth individuals. Cases have involved the administration of estates, contentious probate and inheritance tax. Small has also been involved in the development of trusts and has been dealing with claims against its beneficiaries. The firm also has a considerable track record of advice on elderly client care and protection work, which includes registering enduring powers of attorney, applying for controllerships and acting for controllers. Many of its clients have been with the firm for generations, thanks in no small part to its full-service private client offering.

Mills Selig is best known for its expertise in wills, trusts, estate planning and the administration of estates for high-net-wealth individuals. Real estate continues to be an important area for the private client team, which often acts on the transfer of real estate. Michael Hamill leads the team, which includes solicitor Fiona McFall, who is recommended for her expertise in the administration of estates.
