Work Department

Robert is known for his work in public law, and also has an exemplary practice in inquests and inquiries. Robert is also highly experienced in personal injury, clinical negligence and product liability.

Position

Rob specialises in inquests and inquiries, judicial review, human rights and civil liberties, clinical negligence and personal injury.

He has been involved in some of the most significant public inquiries of the last decade and acted in judicial reviews and appeals of high public importance at all levels up to and including the Supreme Court. He is also an experienced civil practitioner working on very high value personal injury, false imprisonment and clinical negligence claims.

Rob is currently instructed in the Covid and Southport Inquiries. Other notable cases include R (oao Transactual) v Secretary of State for Health and Social Care [2024] EWHC 1936 (Admin) – challenging a ‘ban’ on puberty blockers for transgender children; Rennie  v Secretary of State for the Home Department [2023] EWHC 1794 (Admin) – a challenge to the decision not to implement recommendations of the Grenfell Tower Inquiry; and R. (on the application of Pathan) v Secretary of State for the Home Department [2020] UKSC 41 – Supreme Court case on procedural fairness

Career

Rob was called to the Bar in 2006, initially practising in crime and general common law at 7 Bedford Row. He moved to 5 Essex Chambers in 2018.

Rob is on the Attorney General’s A Panel of Counsel (having been on the B and C Panels previously). He sits as a Deputy District Judge on the South Eastern Circuit

Rob has written for 5 Essex Chambers’ Insight magazine, and presented at seminars on inquests and inquiries
