Jonathan specialises in inquests, public law (with particular expertise in representing coroners), police law, and healthcare regulation (specialising in advising and representing healthcare operators in contentious regulatory cases and public law matters).

Position

Jonathan specialises in inquests and inquiries, healthcare regulation (for providers), police law, and judicial review related to those areas of practice.

Jonathan sat as an Assistant Coroner for over five years in South London.  As well as his membership of 5 Essex Chambers, he is the founder of Healthcare Counsel, a law firm specialising in healthcare regulation.

Jonathan is instructed by Essex County Council in the Lampard Inquiry, a Public Inquiry concerning mental health deaths in Essex.  He was Counsel to the Inquiry in the Fuller Inquiry, an Independent Inquiry into the crimes of David Fuller.  He is regularly instructed by a broad range of Interested Persons in complex and high profile inquests including by private and public sector health and social care providers, local authorities, and police forces.  He is instructed by Coroners in judicial reviews.

Career

Jonathan was called in 2004, completing pupillage in 2005.  As well as practising in chambers, Jonathan has practised in-house for a regulator and was a partner in leading healthcare firms before joining 5 Essex Chambers in 2020.  He also runs Healthcare Counsel, a firm specialising in healthcare regulation.

Jonathan has published chapters on a textbook on social care regulation, journal articles on Public Law, a broad range of articles for trade publications, and articles for 5 Essex Chambers’ publications.  He edits 5 Essex Chambers’ Inquests Authorities Index.
