Carey’s 12-member mining practice is consistently mandated by major, mid-tier and junior mining companies, including in relation to both metallic and non-metallic minerals. Its expertise covers exploration, development and financing matters, as well as M&A, operations, regulatory compliance, and mining, water and surface land rights. The practice additionally advises on environmental law, community relations, project finance, litigation, and environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues. Recent work includes advising on lithium partnerships under Chile’s national lithium strategy, large-value infrastructure financings, strategic joint ventures and the defence of critical mining assets. The natural resources and environment group is co-led by senior partner Rafael Vergara, a longstanding specialist in mining, water rights, energy, ESG issues, surface lands, project finance and corporate matters; and Alberto Cardemil, an adviser on water law, agribusiness, natural resources transactions and corporate law. In the associate ranks, senior Maximiliano Urrutia focuses on mining work, as well as natural resources and energy.
