Stakeholder pensions: the proposed tax regime

United KingdomStrategy

The Government has issued the sixth of its consultation papers on stakeholder pensions. The consultation paper covers the tax regime for stakeholder pensions and the way they will interact with the tax regimes of other forms of approved pension arrangement. The key Government proposals are as follows.

  • There would be a simple integrated tax regime for all defined contribution (DC) pension schemes: stakeholder, personal and occupational (but not pre-1988 retirement annuity contracts).
  • An individual would be able to join any number of DC schemes so long as the overall contribution limit is not exceeded. This new DC regime would be optional for employers’ money purchase pension schemes.
  • Participation would be subject to the adoption of Inland Revenue model rules.
