7 King's Bench Walk > The Legal 500 Rankings
London Bar > Insurance and reinsurance Tier 1
7 King’s Bench Walk ‘contains the finest insurance barristers at the English Bar‘, with the set’s expertise including disputes over avoidance of cover, points of construction, and a wide range of coverage issues. The set recently maintained its track record in appearing in Supreme Court cases, including The FCA Business Interruption Test Case litigation (of considerable importance to insureds and insurers impacted by COVID-19 lockdown business interruption losses), in which the Supreme Court dismissed the insurers’ appeals and allowed the FCA’s appeals (albeit on qualified terms); and made significant new law on concurrent causation. Recently appointed silk Josephine Higgs KC represented the second interveners, the Hospitality Insurance Group Action; Gavin Kealey KC, and Andrew Wales KC and senior junior Sushma Ananda and rising star Henry Moore acted for Amlin; and Jonathan Gaisman KC and Adam Fenton KC represented Hiscox.Rising stars

‘An excellent set, where the barristers have incisive intelligence, skill and extensive experience in exclusively commercial practice areas.‘
‘We treat 7KBW as our go-to set for coverage matters. It is unrivalled.‘
‘Contains the finest insurance barristers at the English bar. The strength, depth and experience of 7KBW is second to none.‘
‘7KBW is one of the pre-eminent chambers (if not the pre-eminent chambers) for insurance law, with considerable strength in depth in terms of leading and junior counsel.‘
‘7KBW has a barrister for almost every requirement. A very talented group of practitioners.‘
Clerking
‘The clerks are second to none and really understand the insurance sector that we operate in.‘
London Bar > Commercial litigation Tier 2
7 King’s Bench Walk is ‘a very strong all round commercial set with a barrister to suit all requirements‘. Traditionally known for strengths in insurance and shipping it is also ‘great at any commercial disputes‘ backed by ‘lots of strength in depth from juniors‘. The set is a popular choice for major cross-border international litigations, and in PetroSaudi Oil Services (Venezuela) Ltd v Clyde & Co , David Allen KC and Jason Robinson represented PetroSaudi in its bid access US$325m in the law firm’s escrow account, which had been frozen due to alleged collections with the 1MDB fraud, to satisfy an arbitral award. Another highlight was the set’s role on the FCA test case litigation, FCA v Arch and others, concerning business interruption claims concerning COVID-19 lockdowns, with several members including Gavin Kealey KC and Jonathan Gaisman KC respectively leading for two selected insurers, Amlin and Hiscox.Rising stars

‘7KBW remains my go-to for any matters relating to insurance or shipping, but increasingly also for general commercial matters.’
Clerking

London Bar > Commodities Tier 2
7 King’s Bench Walk is ‘one of the pre-eminent sets and very good strength in depth’ and ‘the number of good juniors coming through the ranks is encouraging’. Robert Bright KC is one of the standout silks for commodities cases and ‘continues to excel in this area’; he represented the claimant Septo Trading Inc v Tintrade Inc, which went to the Court of Appeal and currently has an application to the Supreme Court pending. The set also has some of the strongest juniors in Sandra Healy, Richard Sarll and the ‘clear, thoughtful and smart’ Jessica Sutherland. Healy handled a high-value dispute Quadra Commodities S.A. v XL Insurance Company S.E. and Others, which concerned a large-scale fraud in the Ukrainian grain industry and raised issues regarding the passing of title to the grain in the circumstances of the fraudulent scheme.Leading Silks

London Bar > International arbitration: counsel Tier 2
7 King’s Bench Walk has ‘great strength-in-depth and many absolute superstars‘. The set is a market leader for insurance and reinsurance arbitrations, but its members are ‘brilliant all-rounders’ who are often involved in headline commercial claims connected to other key sectors. Notable disputes include four arbitrations stemming from the US$1bn collapse in 2014 of the Danish company OW Bunker, a case that at varying times involved Robert Bright KC and Clara Benn, and currently has Marcus Mander acting as sole counsel for the company’s Norwegian bankruptcy estate. Members are also regularly involved in major jurisdictional and award challenges in the courts, as seen in in Enka Inssat Ve Sanayi v Chubb Russia Insurance, in which David Bailey KC, Mander and Benn defended Chubb against a landmark anti-suit injunction that went to the Supreme Court and ultimately settled a lengthy debate on the governing law of arbitration agreements.Leading Silks

‘7KBW is the go-to set for disputes work. Brilliant all-rounders with a strong focus on insurance work.’

‘7 KBW is clearly the leading set for insurance and reinsurance law with great strength in depth from junior to senior level; always prepared to go the extra mile to provide support.’
‘7KBW is an excellent set and has barristers generally of very high quality.’
Clerking

London Bar > Professional negligence Tier 2
7 King’s Bench Walk have had a successful year with claims against accountants, auditors, brokers, surveyors and solicitors. The set has acted at the highest level, especially with Rebecca Sabben-Clare KC involvement in Manchester Building Society v Grant Thornton, which raised an issue of principle about scope of duty and the extent of damages; the Supreme Court found that the building society could recover losses after a change of accountancy method caused it to close out interest rate swaps at a £32m loss. Jonathan Gaisman KC is a specialist in financial claims, with cases including defending KPMG against Carillion PLC for damages in excess of over £1 billion, which raises significant legal issues such as the recoverability of trading losses. James Brocklebank KC has deep experience of audit and accounting negligence cases. Jo Higgs KC is a 2022 Silk appointment.Leading Silks

London Bar > Shipping Tier 2
Offering ‘plenty of good barristers at all levels’, 7KBW’s silks and juniors were instructed on numerous high-profile shipping disputes in 2021. Robert Bright KC led Charles Holroyd in OCM Maritime v Courage Shipping, a successful claim by shipowners which involved accusations of terrorism by the United States government and the subsequent sanctions affecting charterparties and possession of vessels. Elsewhere, Richard Sarll had a strong year due to his involvement as sole counsel in The Ever Given as well as another Suez Canal case concerning a three party collision near the port of Suez, where he also acted as sole counsel against a silk. A number of barristers, including Stephen Hofmeyr KC, Alexander MacDonald, and Marcus Mander, appeared in CV Stealth, a landmark case arising from the detention of a vessel attempting to illegally ship crude oil out of Venezuela. Hofmeyr was also instructed in Argentum Exploration Limited v Silver, where he acted for clients seeking an award of salvage following the recovery of silver from a shipwreck. The collision between a cruise ship and a river cruise vessel in Venice in 2019 gave rise to River Countess B.V. v MSC Cruise Management, in which Tim Jenns represented the claimants.Leading Silks

Work highlights
London Bar > Energy Tier 3
7 King’s Bench Walk is ‘by far the leading set for insurance and reinsurance work because of its strength in depth at all levels’. In fact, one client remarks that ‘the strength in depth means that one rarely has to look elsewhere’. Energy is a core strand in the set’s insurance work. Alistair Schaff KC acted for SBM against the insurers of the YME MOUPstor oil rig in one of the largest marine energy cases running through the Commercial Court with an estimated value of over £1bn, in a case involving 25 witnesses and 15 expert disciplines, which settled shortly before trial for a fraction of the sum claimed. Among other key highlights are cases involving PetroSaudi and PDVSA, in which Jonathan Gaisman KC, David Allen KC, Simon Kerr , Jason Robinson and Michael Ryan – all from the set – were instructed for PetroSaudi in arbitration and litigation proceedings, while James Brocklebank KC has advised various underwriters on the consequences of the ongoing multibillion-dollar dispute.

London Bar > Fraud: civil Tier 3
7 King’s Bench Walk is ‘making its name in the fraud market’ particularly ‘where it crosses over with commodities financing, or multi-jurisdictional disputes‘. Clients are well supplied with experienced barristers at the senior and junior levels. In recent matters, David Allen KC is leading Keir Howie on behalf of the primary defendant in Maroil Trading and Sea Pioneer Shipping Corporation v Cally Shipholdings and others, a high-profile claim listed for trial in 2022 involving the breach of a confidentiality agreement and allegations that a senior executive of litigation funder Burford Capital traded confidential documents related to the case in return for a sex tape linked to an entirely separate legal battle. Several members were involved in VTB Bank v Antipinsky and Others, a case concerning the financial collapse of the company owning the Antipinsky refinery in Russia, in which Michael Holmes KC represented a defendant, Machoinport, with Jonathan Gaisman KC and Michael Ryan among those representing VTB.Rising stars

‘Highly regarded set and making its name in the fraud market.’
‘This is an area in which 7KBW has increased specialism over the last 8 years since Clive Freedman KC (now Mr Justice Freedman) joined chambers and led many juniors in his practice which focused on some of the key civil fraud court cases in that time. But many other members of chambers have always practised in this area, particularly where it crosses over with, for example, commodities financing, or multi-jurisdictional disputes.’
‘They have some strong juniors coming through in civil fraud.’

With their commercial expertise, members also appear in other jurisdictions, including Hong Kong, Singapore, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, the Bahamas, the British Virgin Islands and Gibraltar, and before inter-national arbitration tribunals in numerous jurisdictions. Recruitment: 7KBW attracts pupils of only the highest quality and pursues a policy of only taking tenants of such quality either from those starting their careers in law or from those in mid-career who have elected to change from another part of the profession. The emphasis on quality has meant a steady but selective growth in the overall number of tenants over the past years.
