Chambers’ core fields of specialism are family, children and finance; property; wills, trusts and probate; commercial and employment; personal injury and professional negligence; and public sector.

The set: Established in 1976, Guildford Chambers has a deserved reputation for excellence in its fields of practice, and a friendly, down-to-earth approach. It accepts instructions from solicitors in private or corporate practice and local authorities, and prosecutes on behalf of many agencies. Its members appear in courts and tribunals, chair arbitrations and attend conferences at venues throughout the country, and some are part-time judges. It undertakes direct professional access work and welcomes direct instructions from surveyors, accountants and members of other approved professional bodies. Members also undertake public access work.

Types of work undertaken: The family team deals with all aspects of divorce and separation. Expertise regarding children includes emergency protection orders, care and supervision orders, learning disability, chronic neglect, emotional abuse and sexual abuse, as well as residence and contact. Financial expertise includes the full range of financial remedy, from high-value cases often involving complex trust arrangements, family business, pension and property issues, to more straightforward cases, including middle- and low-income matters. Experience includes TOLATA/cohabitee disputes, Schedule 1 Children Act 1989 matters and Inheritance Act issues.

Chancery and property work includes all areas of land law (including rights of way and other easements and restrictive covenants), proprietary estoppel and other equitable remedies, landlord and tenant, trusts of land, trusts and related tax considerations, and wills and probate.

Commercial litigation on behalf of corporate and private clients includes bankruptcy, company issues, contract, construction and consumer protection law.

Employment expertise ranges from references and recruitment issues to drafting contracts, policies and procedures, advising on employee incentive schemes, and handling director and senior executive severance, as well as representation at tribunals regarding unfair dismissal and other claims, together with disciplinary hearings.

Personal injury work varies in complexity and value, from routine fast-track road traffic claims to multi-track clinical negligence claims at county and High Court level. Clinical negligence is a specialism.

Education expertise on behalf of local authorities, responsible bodies and parents includes special education needs, disability discrimination in schools, admission and exclusion cases, and education of children in care, as well as further and higher education and education negligence issues. Members act for independent schools in relation to contractual disputes, discrimination claims, admissions and exclusions, and advise on the CSCI inspection requirements for boarding providers.

Professional regulatory work extends to teachers, social workers, doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and dentists. Social care issues include children’s homes, boarding schools, residential special schools, domiciliary care, nurses’ agencies and matters under the jurisdiction of the healthcare commission. Regarding costs litigation, the firm has experience in conducting detailed assessments in the Senior Courts Costs Office and in county courts as the receiving party and paying party, and has been involved in many cases.
