Dispute resolution Tier 1

Olmedo Abogados is a leading force in the dispute resolution market in Paraguay, demonstrating an ability to process a high volume of diverse matters. The practice is instructed by domestic and international clients on civil, commercial, labour, tax, criminal and environmental disputes, as well as international  arbitration. The sizeable department has been particularly active advising banks and financial entities on debt recovery claims: co-heads Enrique Zacarías and Sebastian Olmedo represented Banco Regional in several debt collections, and are counselling the bank on more than 1,000 lawsuits with an aggregate value of $18m. Recent high-profile mandates involved representing Unicentro as claimant in a $10m construction dispute; and advising Financiera Rio in the first litigation in Paraguay brought against a trustee in connection with asset-backed securities' transactions. Co-leader José Olmedo is another key partner in the department. Clients include Puma Energy Paraguay, Syngenta and Banco Nacional de Fomento.

Banking and finance Tier 2

Olmedo Abogados advises banking entities, financial institutions and government bodies on all aspects of banking and finance operations. The five-partner team not only demonstrates ample experience of capital market transactions, but is also well versed in individual and syndicated loans, debt restructuring, and the establishing of banks and subsidiaries, as well as project finance and contentious matters. Key client Banco Regional sought co-head Gustavo Olmedo's advice on various occasions: as borrower on several loans, including a $150m agreement with City/OPIC; and as lender in a syndicated loan agreement through which it will provide $50m towards the financing of the PPP project of Routes 2 and 7. Another headline mandate saw the team assist Caterpillar Financial on a debt restructuring transaction. Co-heads Graciela Royg and Ana Peña are the key contacts. Environment Tier 2

Corporate clients from the agrochemicals and energy sectors frequently seek Olmedo Abogados' advice on licensing, permits, compliance, due diligence and environmental impact assessments. Practice head Gustavo Olmedo is assisting Providencia following an accusation related to unlawful land matters on the shore of Ypacarai Lake. Another on-going matter involves representing Agropecuaria Tifunque in a complaint regarding the improper diversion of water due to a rice production in the Misiones Department. Other representative clients include Puma Energy and Syngenta.

Tax Tier 2

Olmedo Abogados' tax team has a particularly impressive track record handling litigious fiscal matters. Under the joint leadership of the very well-regarded Gustavo Olmedo and José Olmedo, the seven-strong team offers advice on national and international tax planning, fiscal aspects of complex transactions, customs audits, tax incentives and special regimes, as well as double taxation. Junior partner Víctor Agüero, who specialises in customs law, administrative matters and privatisations, is also active in the department. Departmental clients include Syngenta and Puma Paraguay.

Corporate and M&A Tier 3

Under the joint leadership of Gustavo Olmedo and José Olmedo, the corporate and commercial practice at Olmedo Abogados continues to provide 'first-class services' ranging from advice on company reorganisations and M&A-structuring to liquidations and corporate governance. The team has been particularly active assisting international newcomers to the Paraguayan market on the establishment of operations and subsidiaries. A recent mandate saw the 'efficient' department act as legal advisor to BLADEX in the negotiation of the $1.27m sale of a grain silo to DIAGRO. Olmedo Abogados' IP practice is noted for providing 'efficient, cost-effective and accurate services'. The four-partner team acts for a client portfolio that includes Hero Motorcorp, Compañía Cervecera Asunción and Unicentro.
