The law firm was founded in 1985 by the attorneys Carlos Alberto Palacios Canellas, Raul Prono Tonanez and Liliana Talavera Aponte. Today, the firm’s staff consists of three partners and nine associates. The main areas of practice are: banking and financial law, shipping law, commercial and corporate law, M&A, international trade and commodities, insurance and reinsurance, employment law and environmental law.
Areas of practice
Banking and finance: In the banking and financial counseling sector, Palacios, Prono & Talavera (PPT) has had a long and successful path of legal advice through the years, with a practical knowledge of banking transactions. At the present time, the firm provides consulting services to Banco Amambay S.A. and to GNB Bank, and external services (litigation) to Sudameris Bank SAECA, as well as to other insurance, financial and currency exchange companies. In the past, the firm had clients such as BankBoston and Bank of America, which were represented by the firm until the conclusion of their business in Paraguay.
Commodities and international trade: In the commodities and international trade field, the office has more than 15 years of expertise, working with multinationals and national companies, farmers, manufacturers and traders. The firm provides legal services ranging from financing and trading, to storage, transportation, insurance and end use. For that purpose, the firm has a strategic branch office located in Ciudad Del Este, where commodities companies in Paraguay settle their centers of business.
Shipping: In the shipping law arena, the firm has unparalleled experience in maritime and river law. The law firm is a local reference with specialized lawyers in river transport (Paraguay-Parana Waterway), port state control (custom and administrative law), marine insurance and international maritime regulation. The office gives advice both on dry and wet areas of shipping law and actively represents leading shipowners, charterers, P&I clubs and traders, nationals and from abroad.
Mergers and acquisitions: The last couple of years has shown a great deal of legal business in the M&A sector for PPT. It advised on the acquisition of large national and international companies, including the leading hotel chains in Paraguay, two major payment networks, a soft drink and beer bottler and distributor, one of the biggest petrol storage and dispatchers and the largest media holdings in the country.
Environment: Environmental law also occupies an important space of the office. The firm advises on environmental license issues, compliance, impact and assessment requirements, hazardous waste disposal requirements and air quality issues. It also offers environmental consulting services and advises on meeting goals regarding legal and social requirements of guidelines such as OSHA, ISO or GRI.
