Intellectual property Tier 1
Well-established local firm Romero Pineda fields a standout intellectual property team, advising on the identification and protection of client's inventions and creations. Furthermore, the strong practice's portfolio of services includes IP matters related to corporate transactions, copyright issues and unfair competition matters. The practice group is led by a quartet comprising eminent managing partner José Roberto Romero, multinational portfolio expert Roxana Romero, Carlos Castillo and associate Elsy Duran. Castillo, who also leads the firm's litigation department, frequently acts on contentious IP matters and Duran coordinates trade mark clearances and registrations. Dispute resolution Tier 2
A well-established firm in the local market, Romero Pineda assists clients with resolving contentious matters and represents them before different entities and courts. Led by Roberto Romero, Carlos Castillo, Karla Patricia Alas and Feridee Alabi, the litigation department excels at handling anti-piracy and trade mark infringement cases in collaboration with the firm's strong intellectual property practice. Founding partner Romero focuses on arbitration agreements as well as dispute settlements and Castillo acts primarily at the nexus of intellectual property and litigation, while associate Alas also handles mediation and matters relating to new technologies, digital law and consumer protection, and Alabi specialises in labour disputes.
Banking and finance Tier 3
Assisting foreign banks, private credit institutions, insurance companies and financial institutions alike, Romero Pineda operates a national as well as regional banking and finance practice. Camila Villafuerte is the key contact in this practice area. In October 2019, Daisy Martinez left the firm to take up a post with the government's Financial System Appeals Committee (CASF).
Corporate and M&A Tier 3
Romero Pineda advises national and multinational companies on the establishment, diversification and expansion of their operations in Central America. Areas of specialisation include aviation, procurement and energy law. Antitrust expert Francisco Martinez, who was promoted to partner in January 2020, is the key contact in the corporate group and leads the department together with Camila Villafuerte, who also has expertise in banking, finance and insurance law.

Main areas of practice
Intellectual property: the firm’s lP department helps clients identify, secure, assert and defend all aspects of their intellectual property rights in trademarks, copyright, patents, domain names and trade secrets. In addition, Romero Pineda’s lawyers have been recognized for their transactional experience involving IP, such as acquisitions, sales, technology transfers, e-commerce, and licenses and franchising. The group also prosecutes the health/sanitary registrations required for health, personal care and food products. With the litigation department, the firm has unequalled capability in IP conflicts, disputes and enforcement.
Corporate: the firm advises domestic, regional and multinational entities on the establishment, diversification and expansion of commercial operations, including business structure, M&A, contracts, free trade zone projects, due diligence, labor relations, immigration and foreign investment registration.
Banking and finance: Romero Pineda’s banking department provides highly specialized legal services to domestic and international banking and financial institutions regarding the establishment and development of operations in El Salvador and Central America. The firm is experienced in handling matters such as incorporation of new banks; secured and unsecured transactions and collateral; syndicated loans; acquisition of local banks; cross-border loan transactions; and due diligence investigations.
Litigation: the firm is experienced in all types of commercial disputes and equipped to handle complex cases involving multinational parties. It has a demonstrated record of success at the trial and appellate levels and is experienced in negotiating settlements. Several of its lawyers are certified mediators and arbitrators.
Antipiracy: the firm’s specialized team works with clients to manage and implement their strategies and enforcement programs, including monitoring procedures, border enforcement measures and litigation.
Labor law: the firm’s expertise in labor law is key to helping clients to comply with their labor obligations and receive appropriate support for the management of their workforces.
Tax law: the firm advises on general and industry-specific issues, including the creation of structures to minimize tax liability; tax effects of financing by international lenders; taxes on mergers, acquisitions and joint ventures involving local and international companies; and tax implications of insurance policy sales.
