Career

Kate is an Australian qualified solicitor working in the Media and Communications Law department.  She advises both claimants and defendants on a range of reputation and crisis management issues, including defamation, privacy, data protection, and harassment.  Kate advises private individuals, HNW individuals, and organisations at both the pre and post publication stages.

Kate’s recent work includes:-

Defamation

Representing an online sports insights business in multiple defamation actions. Acting for a large trade union in a number of pre and post publication matters, including against The Sun, The Times, and The Telegraph. Successfully deterring defamation litigation against an entertainment worker over statements published on social media. Acting for a national business in a libel action against a competitor.

Privacy/data protection

Successfully exercising various clients’ ‘right to erasure’ under the UK GDPR to obtain delisting of adverse Google search results from searches for their names. Securing the removal and amendment of inaccurate material published online, including on due diligence/AML databases.

Harassment

Preventing further harassment (online and offline) of various clients by individuals such as former partners, competitors, and colleagues. Acting for a former councillor in respect of online harassment from a citizen journalist. Representing a social media personality in relation to online harassment.

Other work

Prior to joining Brett Wilson LLP, Kate was an Associate at Clyde & Co, where she worked on a number of high-profile privacy breaches and advised on privacy and data protection matters, including:-

Advising on data breach notification obligations, freedom of information requests, and sanctions risk & compliance. Delivering time-critical and strategic advice during high profile cyber incidents to minimise reputational and claims risk. Assisting with IT liability and recovery actions. Advising on regulatory investigations and contractual disclosure obligations to stakeholders.
