The Lex 100 Verdict

Trethowans offers a 'first-rate training contract and solid exposure to complex matters'. 'The people, the culture and the little things' are the winning features of the firm. During their training, trainees can expect to undertake seats in at least two of Trethowans' five offices across the south of England. Recruits receive 'a lot more responsibility and flexibility' and feel that they 'have a more central role in the progression of matters than those who trained in the City'. The 'work/life balance is fantastic' and 'Trethowans looks after its employees and has a very friendly working culture – I have been made to feel valued from day one'. The firm's Lex 100 Winner awards for work/life balance and inclusiveness are therefore easily explained. Gripes include the 'lack of international work' and that 'training and supervision can vary greatly between seats'. But, in good departments, trainees can expect to have 'big involvement in matters' and even to 'run files from beginning to completion'. A 'secondment to a corporate finance firm' and 'having my first appraisal, realising that I am on the right track and that I am doing the work to the correct standard' were also proud moments. By contrast, 'being put in a seat I really didn't want' and 'having minimal work due to there also being an NQ and paralegal in the department' did not make trainees feel that they were being stretched or developed. To train at a mid-sized regional firm with 'good growth prospects', where 'the ethos and values are practised on a daily basis', take a closer look at Trethowans.
