TMT (technology, media and telecoms) > PATMA: Patent attorneys Tier 2

Haseltine Lake Kempner LLP focuses on longstanding direct client relationships, partnering with clients in strategic matters and handling a substantial amount of original patent application drafting. Both in the UK and before the EUIPO, the firm is among the most active filers of applications, with the EPO oppositions and appeals practice tying in well for European matters. With three dedicated teams, namely hi-tech (including electronics and communications, AI and software), chemistry and life sciences (including pharmaceuticals), and engineering (automotive, aerospace, energy and environment), the firm is well equipped for a broad spread of matters. The drafting and prosecution of standard essential telecoms patents is an area of particular strength. The firm offers combined prosecution and litigation services and counts among its staff Leeds-based solicitor Brian Whitehead who became an Appointed Person before the UKIPO in 2020. Outside of the UK, the firm has a long-established office in Munich as well as offices in the Netherlands and China. Alex Rogers in Bristol, Ashley Giles in London, Simon Rees in Bristol and Richard Kempner in Leeds are the heads of the practice.

TMT (technology, media and telecoms) > PATMA: Trade mark attorneys Tier 2

Haseltine Lake Kempner LLP has seen substantial growth in 2020 thanks to a significant increase in UK trade mark and design work in preparation for Brexit. The practice impresses in advisory and contentious matters alike, consistently appearing among the most active UK and EU trade mark filers as well as among the most active representatives in contentious hearings at the UKIPO. Since the 2019 merger between Kempner & Partners and Haseltine Lake, the firm also has a powerful litigation practice to offer. With its deep bench, the practice is able to assist clients from a wide range of sectors. Particularly busy areas are the chemistry and life sciences, food, hi-tech and engineering sectors, partly thanks to the firm's neighbouring patent practice whose clients also instruct the firm's soft IP experts. The duo at the helm of the practice consists of Martin Krause, who splits his time between the Bristol, London and Munich offices, and Jason Dainty, based in Leeds and London. In 2020, solicitor Brian Whitehead was chosen as an Appointed Person at the UKIPO.

Haseltine Lake Kempner (HLK) has an unwavering commitment to diversity and maintaining an inclusive working environment in which everyone can fulfil their potential and maximise their contribution. This is key in cultivating leaders, building effective teams and continually developing as a Firm.

Our colleague led working groups on D&I and Mental Health were established not only to ensure that every person within HLK enjoys a sense of belonging but is also treated fairly and respectfully. The working groups consist of a cross section of colleagues who are the voice of our people and have representation at the most senior level of the Firm. At the core of what they do is encourage open dialogue which informs their agenda in a collaborative way, allowing for initiatives that positively impact colleagues within the Firm and anyone seeking to join HLK in the future. We’re very proud of their dedication and consistently strive to be the best employer we can be with their guidance. HLK celebrates innovation, which is accomplished when we recognise our similarities and embrace our differences. It’s at the heart of our culture and the reason HLK has its dynamic edge.

As one of the earliest Charter signatories of ‘IP Inclusive’, an industry-wide group aiming is to raise awareness and improve equality, diversity and inclusivity in the IP community, we take this commitment seriously. Some of the HLK colleagues were fundamental in establishing the Charter scheme. Our leadership team actively participate in IP Inclusive’s senior leaders’ diversity think tank and are proud to make the following pledges.

HLK has an internal Diversity and Inclusion working group, called DiveIn, with representatives across the firm. The Group aims to develop policies and practices on diversity and inclusion within our firm. It is not only the right thing to do but also the smart thing to do, we value everyone as just that, an individual and in turn colleagues are engaged with each other, their team and the Firm. To this end we run bi-annual Progress And Contribution Talks (PACTs) for all colleagues, that not only identify and prioritise training and development opportunities, but actively seek insights from colleagues about how we can remain their employer of choice.

Being an employer that truly listens leads to an empowered workforce, fostering trust and mutual respect, this fuels all colleague and client interaction. In short, our people are at the heart of everything we do.
