Established 175 years ago, Mackinnons has always been associated with admiralty, marine commercial and marine insurance cases. Its involvement with the shipping and commercial community has increased over the last 30 years, with the result that five out of seven partners are predominantly in sea-related commercial legal work.

The firm: The firm acts for a varied and prestigious client base, including most of the leading P&I clubs and fishing mutuals, major port authorities, offshore drilling contractors and a number of local, UK and international shipping companies. Prominent clients include Sentinel Marine, Schlumberger, Skuld, Paragon offshore, GulfMark UK Ltd, Aberdeen Harbour Board, Peterhead Port Authority and Sunderland Marine.

The firm’s approach provides the necessary flexibility of response combined with dedicated expertise and experience. Great pride is taken in providing a responsive and professional service commensurate with the commercial needs of clients.

In private client matters the firm has a sensitive touch complementing its highly attuned legal and financial awareness. It believes in developing strong personal relationships and providing ready access in order to gain a true understanding of individual circumstances.

Types of work undertaken: Mackinnons has established expertise in all aspects of commercial and litigation services in marine matters throughout Scotland, the UK and worldwide. In recent years, it has been involved in major fleet sale and purchase transactions, high-profile offshore and shipboard accident claims and marine casualties, the drafting and promotion of Harbour Revision Orders and in international oil pollution incidents. Shipbuilding and repair contracts and fishing vessel sale and purchase transactions together with the associated fishing vessel licensing and quota aspects are regularly dealt with by the firm’s commercial team. The firm routinely deals with personal injury claims, and Admiralty actions such as ship arrest, collisions, salvage and cargo claims. Consistent with Mackinnons’ ethos of having dedicated expertise in niche areas, the employment team has a particular focus on shipping and marine law generally. The team routinely advises on technical and complex matters such as immigration issues, territorial jurisdiction, the rights of seafarers and whistle-blowing issues within the safety critical environment of offshore work.

A 24/7 emergency response service is delivered to shipping and offshore clients, dealing with problems where and when they arise.

The firm retains a strong client base in other traditional and general business sectors, providing a broad spectrum of commercial services. The firm’s commercial team deals with partnerships, LLPs, limited companies and joint ventures and can also advise on banking and finance matters and, together with the litigation department, handle disputes and commercial litigation. Commercial property services are also provided to a wide variety of clients including port and harbour authorities. Private client services are also supplied by the firm, including advice in wills, tax planning and when moving house.

Mackinnons anticipates the expansion of its market share in its core areas of work.
