Ellex is 'the most exceptional player in the Baltic market', according to one client, and continues to win the biggest share of the country's largest commercial transactions and M&A deals. Practice co-heads Zilvinas Zinkevicius and Paulius Gruodis recently advised Estonia's biggest renewable energy company on its merger across the Baltic states. Industry and regulatory team head Jaunius Gumbis and Marius Juonys are also noted practitioners, and Robertas Čiočys, who heads the private equity and venture capital subgroup, is recommended for his specialty in liquidation matters. Dispute resolution Tier 1
Ellex's lawyers are 'experts in the field' and regularly act in cross-border disputes and arbitration. Co-led by Ramunas Petravicius and Giedrė Aukštuolien, the team represented East Capital Baltic Fund in claims for €10.5m in damages against one of the largest dairy producers in the Baltics. Vilija Vaitkute Pavan, who also serves as an arbitrator, advised the Ministry of Justice on a matter initiated by Vladimir Antonov of now-insolvent bank Snoras regarding the alleged expropriation of shares. The case was dismissed by the Moscow District Commercial Court. Other highlights included corporate litigation expert Egidijus Baranauskas acting for a major tax institution in bankruptcy proceedings, assisted by senior associate Jovita Gabniene. The practice group saw the addition of new associate Aiste Mikociuniene, who joined from the Ministry of Justice.
Employment Tier 1
Ellex stands out as being the ‘best in the Baltic market’, according to one client, and is active in a range of employment matters, including cross-border transfers, dismissals and litigation. Led by Ramunas Petravicius and Rimantas Stanevicius, the team advised Uber on the employment aspects of its operations in Lithuania and conducted a review of its global incentives programme. Petravicius also assisted longstanding client Sicor Biotech with the implementation of the Labour Code, which included reviewing HR documentation. Audinga Liekyte joined the team from Primus Derling. Clients include H&M and Revolut Technologies.
EU and competition Tier 1
Noted for its 'excellent ability to handle large pan-Baltic assignments', Ellex is led by the 'exceptional' Marius Juonys, who is advising OP Financial Group on the competition law aspects of the sale of its insurance business in the Baltic states and representing the client in merger control proceedings before the Lithuanian Competition Council. The team has vast expertise in handling private enforcement disputes, merger clearance and state aid cases. Co-head Jaunius Gumbis is noted for his specialism in the commercial and regulated industries. He has been acting for Orlen Lietuva in a claim for abuse of dominant position against the state railway company. Senior associate Karolis Kačerauskas is also recommended.
Intellectual property Tier 1
Ellex advises clients on the full spectrum of IP matters, including the enforcement of trade marks and patents and copyright infringements. Practice head Vytautas Mizaras and Mantas Rimkevičius successfully acted for football club Kauno Žalgiris in a trade mark dispute relating to the use of the name 'Žalgiris', as well as representing Kauno Žalgiris basketball club in a related dispute. Other key figures in the practice include Jaunius Gumbis. Clients include Coca-Cola and AkzoNobel. Former practice co-head Laura Ziferman left the partnership to co-found Law Firm WALLESS Burgienė, Rečiūnas and partners.
Projects and energy Tier 1
Ellex's key strengths are in commercial energy transactions, electricity projects and regulatory work governing heating and natural gas. Dovile Greblikiene heads the energy group and has been providing cross-border advice to Baltpool energy exchange on the expansion of its business. Specialising in infrastructure projects, Ramunas Petravicius is advising on a gas transmission project between Poland and Lithuania. Jaunius Gumbis heads the regulatory industries and trade practice.
Real estate and construction Tier 1
Ellex is the 'clear firm of choice' for international development companies and private equity real estate investors, advising on matters spanning multiple jurisdictions. Associate partner Dovile Stančikaitė advised Danske Bank on the leasing of a 12,000-square-metre office building in Vilnius. Ramunas Petravicius is advising LitGrid on the design and reconstruction of several major transformer stations as part of a state energy project. Other clients include Hollister Incorporated and East Capital. Evaldas Klimas has now left the firm for WALLESS Burgienė, Rečiūnas and partners, and former practice head Indrė Jonaitytė-Gricė and Tomas Milašauskas departed for in-house roles.
Shipping and transport Tier 1
Aviation and railway matters remain a specialty for Ellex's transportation practice group, which is led by Dovile Greblikiene. Miroslav Nosevic successfully represented Skinest Baltija in a claim for damages against Lithuanian Railways relating to a replacement contract. Ramunas Petravicius is advising RB Rail on the ongoing Rail Baltica megaproject and has also advised the Ministry of Transport on Lithuania's airport services. Laura Ziferman has left the practice to found WALLESS Burgienė, Rečiūnas and partners.
Tax Tier 1
Ellex has an 'outstanding' reputation for advising on international tax planning, transactional tax structuring and conducting tax risk assessments. New practice head Gintaras Balcius is highlighted for his expertise in tax-related litigation and risk, and acts for clients such as Danske Bank and Uber. The team, which includes senior associate Antanas Butrimas, has also assisted with the tax structuring of a number of cross-border and heavily regulated corporate transactions. Former practice head Aistė Medelienė left the firm to co-found WALLESS Burgienė, Rečiūnas and partners.
TMT Tier 1
Ellex acts for international technology giants and telecoms companies in a range of matters pertaining to data protection and cybersecurity. Along with the firm's offices in Latvia and Estonia, the 'skilled' team is advising IBM on a myriad of contentious and non-contentious issues relating to its Baltic subsidiaries.
