Banking and finance Tier 1
The ‘very dedicated’ and ‘strong’ team at PLMJ advised the European Investment Bank on a €300m risk-sharing instrument with BPI involving a credit portfolio of new loans to SMEs, and acted for REN and REN Finance as borrowers in the €150m term facility agreement with the China Development Bank. Both matters were led by the recommended André Figueiredo. Hugo Rosa Ferreira and Gonçalo dos Reis Martins advised CGD - Caixa Geral de Depósitos on its €800m portfolio sale of NPLs as part of the divesting plan imposed on the client by the European Central Bank. Bruno Ferreira ‘makes a real effort to understand the client’s business’. Rodrigo Formigal left to join Abreu Advogados in July 2018.
Capital markets Tier 1
PLMJ' team ‘sets a fast pace’ and is led by practice head André Figueiredo, whose ‘remarkable technical knowledge’ and ‘capacity to adapt to different contexts’ and ‘see the bigger picture’ set him apart. He advised the Portuguese Sovereign Debt Agency (IGCP) on the €4bn issuance of sovereign notes by the Republic of Portugal. ‘Solution-driven’ and ‘experienced’ Bruno Ferreira assisted MFS Investment Management, as target minority shareholder, in the takeover of EDP Renováveis by EDP. Gonçalo dos Reis Martins and senior associate Alexandre Norinho de Oliveira are also recommended.
PLMJ stands out for its ‘ability to anticipate needs and goals’, is ‘always available’ and ‘exceeds expectations’. With deep private equity expertise, it advised Macquarie European Infrastructure Fund 5 on the acquisition of Empark; senior associate Rita Albuquerque was involved in this matter. The team also assisted ELQ Investors VIII and Omega Luxco with taking a stake in Outsystems. Other names to note are Maria João Ribeiro Mata, Diogo Perestrelo and Luís Sáragga Leal. Tomás Pessanha and Manuel Liberal Jerónimo, who was previously a managing associate with the firm, left to join Garrigues Portugal. Manuel Santos Vítor is now with Abreu Advogados.
Dispute resolution Tier 1
The ‘swift’ and ‘efficient’ team at PLMJ displays ‘extreme dedication’, ‘cost-effectiveness’ and the ability to ‘simplify complex matters’. It is very active in international arbitration and litigation, and in a recent highlight represented Vidatel as respondent and counter-claimant, along with other respondents Mercury and Geni, in a €3.5bn ICC arbitration concerning a shareholder agreement. The matter was led by the ‘brilliant’ José Miguel Júdice, who, however, is set to retire in 2020. Pedro Metello de Nápoles is a ‘fantastic opponent’; Nuno Líbano Monteiro and managing associate Carla Góis Coelho provide ‘effective, simple and imaginative solutions’; Pedro Faria instils ‘security and confidence’; ‘outstanding’ managing associate Inês Gomes da Cruz is a ‘star of the future’. Of counsel Filipa Cansado Carvalho has a focus on arbitration.
Employment Tier 1
PLMJ is ‘very close to its clients’ and lawyers are able to ‘simplify questions and think outside the box’. Domestic and international household names instruct the team. Nuno Ferreira Morgado ‘puts himself in the client's shoes’ and ‘gets straight to the point’; he assisted Toshiba with the redundancy of its sales manager in Portugal. The ‘very competent’ Tiago Cortes assisted TAP in negotiating a five-year collective agreement with the Pilots’ Union (SPAC). Abel Mesquita and Oporto-based Manuel Cavaleiro Brandao are the other names to note.
EU and competition Tier 1
PLMJ suffered a blow when Luís Pinto Monteiro departed to join Garrigues Portugal in May 2018. However, the team remains solid and includes practice head Ricardo Oliveira and Sara Estima Martins, who are both highly regarded. It handled some high-value, complex matters, with one highlight being representing Volvo / Renault Trucks in damages claims filed in Portugal following an infringement decision by the EC relating to an alleged truck-sector cartel.
Fraud and white-collar crime Tier 1
PLMJ ‘impresses with its track record and experience’ and is valued for its ‘proximity to the client’ and ‘strategic view of matters’. It has roles in some of the most headline-grabbing ongoing cases, including representing several defendants in the so-called Operation Marquês, the largest pending criminal investigation into companies and high-profile individuals; and GE Power Controls, also as defendant, which is being accused of violating construction rules causing several deaths and injuries due to a Legionnaires’ disease outbreak. Paulo Farinha Alves and Alexandra Mota Gomes are the names to note. José Ricardo Gonçalves left the firm in February 2019. Pedro Barosa, formerly a senior associate with the firm, is now with Abreu Advogados. João Medeiros joined VDA in September 2019..
Insolvency and restructuring Tier 1
PLMJ gives ‘clear and concise guidance, showing good judgment and political awareness’ including in large, cross-border cases, such as its ongoing representation of Rio Forte in its insolvency. Filipa Cotta is ‘reachable at any time and always provides straightforward and pragmatic advice’. Nuno Líbano Monteiro is ‘a leader who knows how to manage his team’ and his ‘excellent network gives him the capacity to reach targets faster’. Managing associate Catarina Guedes de Carvalho is ‘very meticulous’. Pedro Caetano Nunes is also recommended.
Intellectual property Tier 1
PLMJ is ‘very selective and focused on what really matters’. The team primarily handles copyright and trade mark issues, but has experience representing pharmaceutical-sector clients in patent arbitrations. Highlights included acting for Tiger Coatings in legal action seeking the annulment of the trade mark Aqualac, which in Portugal is owned by CIN, and assisting the Gulbenkian Foundation with copyright and image rights of a digital catalogue of all the foundation’s exhibitions. Manuel Lopes Rocha is very regarded. Ana Teresa Pulido and senior associate Paula Martinho da Silva are the other names to note.
PLMJ adopts a ‘very international' approach and combines a ‘remarkable commitment to its clients’ with ‘common sense in the presentation of fees and time spent on each subject’. The team advised private equity clients on the acquisition of a qualifying holding in Outsystems. ‘Very professional and accurate’ Diogo Duarte Campos advised the main institutional investors in a judicial challenge to decisions by the Bank of Portugal regarding the resolution applied to BES. Manuel Cavaleiro Brandão is noted for his employment expertise. Miguel C. Reis and João Velez de Lima handle tax. Tomás Pessanha and principal associate Manuel Liberal Jerónimo left to join Garrigues.
Projects and project finance Tier 1
PLMJ' practice, headed by Inês Pinto da Costa, acts for contractors in a variety of projects in Angola, and assists clients with a broad range of matters domestically. In a highlight it advised EDP on the procurement aspects of the Salamonde II dam construction, which will be carried out while the existing dam remains operational. Diogo Duarte Campos and Diogo Perestrelo are the other names to note.
Public law Tier 1
PLMJ has seen the departure of Pedro Melo to Miranda & Associados in February 2019 but still fields an impressive team with strong arbitration and projects capabilities and an international outlook. Diogo Duarte Campos and Tiago Duarte advise the main institutional investors on all related administrative aspects regarding the BES resolution claims. Of counsel Frederico Perry Vidal handles international projects, including advising Sogec on an urban road paving and rehabilitation project in Senegal.
Real estate and construction Tier 1
PLMJ' team ‘does not waste time’ and ‘is very focused on clients' needs and very practical and straight-forward in finding solutions to overcome any obstacle’. It advised on real estate transactions on the buyer and seller side and on related M&A deals, portfolio operations and leases. It was also active in several turnkey projects, such as the Time Out Market in Oporto, for the Time Out Group, and a retail complex for Ikea in the Algarve. Practice head Tiago Mendonça de Castro has a ‘very good holistic overview, leadership and negotiation skills’. Francisco Lino Dias is ‘easygoing and friendly with counterparts without harming client's interests’. Rita Alarcão Júdice and Margarida Osório de Amorim are also recommended.
Tax Tier 1
Portuguese powerhouse PLMJ assists financial sector, energy and corporate clients with domestic and international tax matters, M&A, tax restructuring and disputes and is involved in complex and controversial matters, such as its successful representation of Meag Munich Ergo Asset Management before the ECJ and the Portuguese Arbitration Tribunal in a case regarding VAT assessments from 2011 to 2013 filed by the Portuguese Tax Authority, which the firm argued was illegal under EU law; Serena Cabrita Neto was involved in this matter. Other work included assisting the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) with drafting a multilateral convention to avoid double taxation and prevent tax evasion. João Magalhães Ramalho joined Telles de Abreu | Advogados in July 2019. Nuno da Cunha Barnabé left to join Abreu Advogados.
Energy and natural resources Tier 2
The ‘extensive’, ‘practical’ and ‘enthusiastic’ team at PLMJ covers a broad range of matters, including work in lusophone Africa as well as in Portugal. It advised ENI on its co-operation with GALP for the operation of offshore exploration and production (E&P) concessions in Portugal, and on concession rights for an oil and gas project in Angola. Manuel Santos Vítor joined Abreu Advogados in 2019. Ana Oliveira Rocha, previously a managing associate with the firm, is now in-house with Chint Solar.
Planning law Tier 2
PLMJ' 'proactive' team impresses with the way ‘it combines excellent technical capability with a deep understanding of the client, the environment and the impact of various stakeholders’. It advised W.P. Carey on the development of three student residences. Sara Blanco de Morais is ‘focused on client needs and brings an incredible insight to solve problems and provide useful and applicable advice’.
TMT Tier 2
PLMJ acts for an enviable list of IT and media-sector clients, having handled data protection, regulatory, distribution, and governance and administrative disputes. Daniel Reis is valued for his IT and data protection expertise and is ‘always available, with quick and rigorous answers’.
Transport Tier 2
In PLMJ' team, ‘everyone knows their role and that the purpose is to provide value to clients’. The large and varied practice advised Azul Linhas Aéreas Brasileiras on the subleasing of two aircraft to Portugália, and Empordef on the sale of two asphalt tanker vessels to PDVSA Naval. More broadly, the firm advises on port infrastructure matters and on transactional work relating to aviation and shipping, such as assisting Pinto Basto Group with the divestment of its shipping agency operations in Angola.
