Career

Patricio Prieto L. has been a partner since 2014. head of the Insurance and Reinsurance Department and of the Capital Markets team.

He has advised different clients in the issue, buyback, exchange, etc. of bonds, such as Copeval, Watt’s, Falabella, Mall Plaza, Farmacias Ahumada, Salfa, etc. Recently he advised Aguas Andinas in the first placement of a “green bond” in Chile.

He has counseled clients on the issuing of securities, on the formation of private and public investment funds, on the formation and management of private equity funds and on the formation of local Feeder Funds.

In this area, he has participated in the formation and operation of Americas Energy Fund I, Americas Energy Fund II, Americas Energy Fund II Clean Energy, Americas Energy Fund II Clean Energy Parallel Fund L.P., Fondo de Inversión HPH I, Fondo de Inversión HPH II, Fondo de Inversión Olive Tree, Fondo de Inversión Cluster Minero, etc.

Patricio also heads the Insurance and Reinsurance Department and has been involved in the formation, implementation, and operation of insurance and reinsurance companies. He also advises various insurance companies in M&A transactions, in regulatory matters, and in the drafting of policies and the development of new insurance products.

In this area he has participated in the acquisition or formation of many insurance companies, such as, Assurant Chile, Colmena Golden Seguros de Vida, Vida Camara, Chubb Chile, HDI Seguros de Vida, HDI Seguros Generales, HDI Seguros de Garantía y Créditos, Banchile Vida, Seg Chile Seguros Generales, Southbridge Compañia de Seguros Generales, etc.

He earned his law degree from the Universidad de Chile in 1986. He has a post-graduate degree in the Economics of Competition and in Insurance Law from Universidad de los Andes.

Prior to joining Prieto, he worked in the insurance department of Compañía Sudamericana de Vapores (a shipping company).

He is a member of the Chilean Bar Association.

The ‘very committed‘ six-member capital markets practice at full-service law firm Prieto Abogados has a strong market reputation for debt placements in both Chile and the US. Prieto Abogados‘ seven-strong team has strong insurance regulatory credentials in relation to the formation of new (or the acquisition of) existing insurance companies. The group also has extensive experience in insurance product-related distribution agreements, such as bancassurance agreements, and mortgage-related, cell phone protection and extended warranty policies. It is additionally active in claims against insurance companies, as well as negotiating tailor-made insurance policies. The department’s principal adviser is insurance regulatory specialist Patricio Prieto L, who advises on insurance distribution agreements, policy drafting, and group policy-related matters. Former associate María Cristina Ríos exited the firm in May 2022 for Coca Cola Andina.
