Position

Rajah Abusrewil advises local and international fiduciaries, family offices and UHNWIs on all aspects of wealth structuring, specialising in matters of Guernsey and Bermuda law. Rajah has extensive experience both in private practice and in-house, and has worked in London, Bermuda, Cayman and Guernsey, with more than fifteen years’ experience.

She has carved a niche as a leader in the field who specialises in advising international families and family offices on the establishment, administration and termination of trusts, foundations, family offices and related structures, including risk review and mitigation for cross-border structures. Rajah also advises on the regulatory requirements of the Guernsey Financial Services Commission. 

Taking a lead in Walkers international family office offering, Rajah regularly works with clients to create bespoke tailored solutions for their family requirements.  She also focuses international business development in the Middle East region and Switzerland, coordinating with colleagues from our multiple offices.
 
Rajah is also a member of the Guernsey STEP committee, the Guernsey Finance Family Office Steering Committee and the Guernsey Association of Trustees & Guernsey Finance Liaison Committee, and is requested regularly to speak on behalf of Guernsey Finance in London and the Middle East.

Career

Prior to joining Walkers in 2019 Rajah was a Partner in a Guernsey law firm, having also previously been a multi-jurisdictional in-house counsel for an international trust company in their Cayman Islands office, and practiced as a Barrister & Attorney in Bermuda.

She qualified in Bermuda in 2009 and as a Solicitor in England & Wales in 2005.

Walkers offers its HNW clients advice on matters across the UK’s offshore jurisdictions, including the structuring of trusts and charitable vehicles, wills and succession planning. Rajah Abusrewil leads the non-contentious aspect of the practice, assisting with the establishment, management and termination of trust structures, while Nigel Sanders leads on the firm’s contentious matters, representing clients in a range of trust-related disputes. Richard Holden joined the team from Carey Olsen in September 2022, focusing on commercial and trust disputes, including fraud matters. Former practice head Robert Dobbyn departed in September 2022 to join Carey Olsen.

Guernsey > Private client, trusts and tax

The team at Walkers advises HNWIs on the structuring of trusts and family offices, with its strong offshore network complementing its Guernsey practice. The firm has also advised on the creation of a number of novel decentralised autonomous organisation (DAO) trusts, which hold digital assets, including cryptocurrencies; this effort is being led by practice head and structuring specialist Rupert Morris, who also handles contentious matters. Rajah Abusrewil advises on all issues related to wealth structuring, and leads the firm’s Jersey private clients team alongside her Guernsey practice. David Cooney advises clients on trust matters, including where cryptocurrency assets are held in trust, and associated regulatory matters.
