White & Case LLP’s ‘strong’ project finance practice mainly handles highway and renewable energy projects on the lenders’ side. A recent highlight was advising a consortium of banks and institutional investors on the refinancing of a highway project implemented in the form of a PPP for the A8 highway, including project loans, bank loans and a novel form of support by the EIB with a total volume of €440m. The team furthermore advised a banking syndicate on the structured financing of the Monaco 1 gas pipeline and other infrastructure projects by bayernets. It also handles projects abroad, such as for the banks regarding the financing of the expansion of a bauxite mine in Guinea; for NordLB concerning the financing of the Oppido wind farm in Italy; and for Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation and an international banking syndicate in connection with the $3.8bn project financing of the Liwa Plastics Industries Complex in Oman. Florian Degenhardt is the key figure.

The ‘very client orientedWhite & Case LLP offers advice at a ‘high service level’. Highly rated for energy sector advice is Düsseldorf-based Guido Hermeier, who has ‘strong industry expertise, a calm and conciliatory manner and a good network’. He frequently collaborates with Peter Rosin and Thomas Burmeister. The group focuses on M&A transactions, with additional offerings in financing, state aid, environment and planning matters. Until December 2016, Rosin, Hermeier and Jörg Kraffel advised the consortium made up of STEAG and BCG on the bidding procedure for the acquisition of Vattenfall’s lignite and hydro energy business. Transactional work included Burmeister’s assistance of Gasunie, which acquired jordgasTransport from Statoil together with Open Grid Europe. Of counsel Ulrich Büdenbender and Rosin represented EnBW in litigation brought by the city of Stuttgart concerning the transfer of its district heating network. White & Case LLP mainly acts on larger transport PPP projects concerning planning and financing issues; for example, Florian Degenhardt advised a consortium of banks on the refinancing of a motorway project for the A8 motorway. In addition, Norbert Wimmer continues to handle the A7 motorway project in the state of Lower Saxony, the A10/A24 in the state of Brandenburg and the A1/A30 in North Rhine-Westphalia. Another current highlight, handled by Düsseldorf-based Peter Rosin and Berlin-based Jörg Kraffel, is advising STEAG on the sale of 49% of the company to STEAG Fernwärme. Benjamin Schirmer left for CMS in July 2016, while Lars Ole Petersen made local partner in the beginning of 2017.
