Mr. Swanson is a member of the California and Brussels Bars, and is a solicitor of England and Wales and of the Republic of Ireland. Jarrett Arp recently co-led a global team representing UBS in Libor and foreign exchange investigations. Trey Nicoud and Rachel Brass (who are based in San Francisco) are defending Mitsuba and American Mitsuba in a multidistrict litigation (MDL) arising from the Department of Justice (DOJ) investigation into price-fixing in the auto parts industry; Nicoud and Brass represented the clients in the investigation itself. The firm’s work has also spanned areas such as container shipping and consumer electronics. Other recommended individuals include Daniel Swanson (who divides his time between Los Angeles and Brussels) and Cynthia Richman. Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP’s broad practice includes class actions and MDLs, opt-out litigation and merger challenges. A team including Jarrett Arp in Washington DC and New York-based Mark Kirsch, Eric Stock and Lawrence Zweifach is defending UBS in more than a dozen litigated matters in the Southern District of New York; these include cases involving interest rate benchmarks, foreign exchange and precious metals. Daniel Swanson, who divides his time between Los Angeles and Brussels, and Steven Sletten in Los Angeles are representing Chevron in a putative class action in which it is alleged that the client was part of a price-fixing conspiracy with other oil and gas companies with refining operations in California. Swanson heads the antitrust practice with Scott Hammond and Sean Royall. Denver-based Richard Cunningham made partner in January 2018; Peter Sullivan has retired. Cynthia Richman is also noted. In a particularly headline-grabbing matter, the firm is acting for AT&T in the DOJ’s lawsuit challenging the client’s proposed $85bn acquisition of Time Warner; the lead partners are Robert Walters (who divides time between Dallas and Houston), Sean Royall (Dallas/Washington DC) Eric Stock (New York) and Adam Di Vincenzo (Washington DC). Elsewhere, the team has been particularly active in merger control matters in the healthcare sector; in 2017, this included advising Seattle-based Group Health Cooperative on its $1.8bn sale to Kaiser Permanente. Denver-based Richard Cunningham made partner in January 2018, and Joel Sanders has retired. Royall, Daniel Swanson (Los Angeles) and Scott Hammond (Washington DC) jointly head the antitrust practice.
