Edwin Northover is an Asia-based corporate partner and Head of our Financial Institutions and Corporate practices in Asia.

Position

Mr. Northover has a broad cross-border public and private mergers & acquisitions practice, with a particular focus on mergers & acquisitions, joint ventures and distribution agreements in the insurance industry.

Career

Mr. Northover joined Debevoise in 2007 and was based in the firm’s London office prior to his move to Asia. During 2013, Mr. Northover spent six months on secondment to the Mergers & Acquisitions team of a multinational insurance company in Paris. In 2015, he spent a period in the Financial Institutions Group of our New York office. Mr. Northover is admitted to practice in England & Wales and Hong Kong.

He was admitted as a solicitor of the Senior Courts of England & Wales in 2006 and Hong Kong in 2013.

Education

Mr. Northover graduated in 2001 with a Double First Class Honours degree in Modern History from Merton College, University of Oxford. He went on to study at BPP Law School, London (2002-3).

The team at Debevoise & Plimpton LLP assists a diverse client base, consisting of private equity firms, financial institutions, and insurance companies, such as Sun Life, True North, and AIA. With William Chua having left the team in May 2023, Edwin Northover has taken over as practice head, utilising his vast knowledge of joint ventures and distribution agreements to advise on major players in the insurance industry. Northover is also ‘second to none’ when advising on bancassurance agreements.

Hong Kong > Private equity

Debevoise & Plimpton LLP houses a broad team which advises a variety of clients, including financial sponsors, sovereign wealth funds, and family offices on leveraged acquisitions and take private transactions. The group is also known for assisting a number of both domestic and international investment managers. Practice head Edwin Northover displays vast expertise in bancassurance distribution agreements and strategic partnerships, while associate Sheng Shao is noted for his broad knowledge of corporate matters. William Chua left the practice in May 2023 and Wen-Wei Lai rejoined the team from an in-house role.
