Career

Barry is the head of our nationwide Built Environment team. Both of the main legal directories – Legal 500 and Chambers – have ranked him as a leading lawyer in real estate and development projects, in every edition for more than a decade.

Barry has almost 30 years’ experience dealing with property development, options and promotion agreements, urban regeneration, complex site assembly, social housing projects, mixed use schemes and development joint ventures.

Acting for developers, housing associations, local authorities and landowners, Barry understands the priorities and perspectives of each of these sectors (or is a “poacher turned gamekeeper” as one client likes to describe him). In an era of greater partnering between sectors, Barry uses this experience to help clients find workable solutions. He knows what the market will and will not accept; what works and what doesn’t.

Trained Rotheras (now Rothera Dowson) 1991-1994; qualified 1993; Metcalfe Copeman & Pettefar, Peterborough 1994-96; Eversheds, Nottingham 1996-2007; Browne Jacobson, Nottingham partner 2007.

Suki Tonks is another key name, advising clients on complex development agreements and the acquisition of freehold and leasehold properties.

Browne Jacobson LLP is known for providing ‘quality legal advice‘ on a complete range of social housing matters ranging from traditional advice on new developments to advice regarding acquisition of sites and securitisation of social housing schemes, as well as the growing areas of advice to private equity houses looking to invest in social housing developments and advice on joint ventures between social housing associations and private and public sector entities. The practice further features a dedicated litigation team which advises on issues such as insurance claims, personal injury and antisocial behaviour, and which has a specialism in defending disrepair claims. Barry Sully, who is experienced with mixed-use schemes and regeneration projects, leads the team together with Gabor Taller, who has ‘huge amounts of knowledge and understanding in the sector‘, in particular in relation to securitisations.
