Career

As a partner in Gowling WLG’s Toronto office and Canadian practice group leader of its firm-wide Tax Group, Paul Carenza works with a range of Canadian and international clients in the private and public sectors, delivering creative and compliant solutions to meet their business needs.

For more than 20 years, Paul has specialized in providing clients with income tax advice in domestic and cross-border corporate acquisitions, reorganizations, and financings. He also represents clients in disputes with tax authorities, and provides technical expertise on executive compensation matters, including compensation plan design and cross-border assignments. Paul also advises clients in the energy sector in Ontario on payments-in-lieu of taxes and related matters.

Paul is a regular writer, speaker and panellist at various conferences covering a variety of matters related to tax law. He is the editor-in-chief of Thomson Reuters’ Taxation of Executive Compensation and Retirement journal, and also serves as co-editor of Gowling WLG’s Canadian Tax newsletter.

Fluent in both English and French, Paul is called to the Ontario Bar.
