Peter is the head of the Commercial Litigation team

He has advised for over 20 years on a wide range of professional negligence, contractual and intellectual property disputes for individuals and businesses of all sizes. This includes shareholder and partnership issues, disputes involving restrictive covenants in employment contracts, cross-border patent disputes, fraud and defamation.

Peter is experienced in all types of civil court procedures, including applications for appeal, applications for judicial review and applications for interim relief such as injunctions and search orders.

His specialist areas include company/shareholder disputes, fraud, intellectual property disputes, defamation and professional negligence.

Peter has advised on numerous professional negligence claims against a range of insured professionals for substantial sums, all resulting in a successful conclusion either at trial or in a negotiated settlement. He also has extensive mediation experience.

Peter has worked on a wide range of contractual disputes for businesses of all sizes including sole traders, partnerships and both limited and plc company clients. The disputes include enforcement of sale agreements and warranty claims as well as intellectual property disputes concerning patent and trademark protection.

Peter also has experience of advising on a number of multi-million pound shareholder and partnership disputes involving issues such as directors’ duties, minority protection, fraud and misappropriation.

He is also experienced in investigating fraud and overclaiming committed by contractors to the public sector and in subsequent recovery actions.

Covering a broad range of commercial litigation, Ward Hadaway’s ‘very professional, knowledgeable and honest’ team ‘is one of the big players in the Newcastle and North East commercial disputes market’ and stands out for its ‘good communication skills, well-prepared advice and careful analysis’. Acting for a number of NHS trusts, Martin Woodford represented Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust in a dispute with the Bank of Scotland pertaining to a termination notice for a multimillion-pound PFI agreement, while, in other work, team head Peter Hornsey represented Ebac in a manufacturing dispute with STMicroelectronics pertaining to faulty dehumidifiers manufactured by the defendant. In another key mandate, Robert Glassford defended the family-owned energy and property development business, the Banks Group, against a claim concerning a joint venture company and the acquisition of land for residential development in Durham, while the ‘very approachableRussell Ward, who divides his time between Newcastle and Leeds, defended the Newcastle College Group (NCG) against defamation and professional negligence claims brought by a former employee. With a focus on technology-related IP work, Ward Hadaway is best known for advising high-growth technology start-ups and entrepreneurs, while also having particular expertise assisting spin-out companies from the university sector and pharmaceutical clients. Team head Alex Shiel continues to advise Tech City on a number of IP matters including trade mark registrations, sponsorship agreements and other contracts concerning various products the client has developed. The practice also acted for Imperial Pharmaceuticals on brand licensing matters and on its trade mark protection and enforcement strategy. In the university sector, the team acted for start-up businesses supported by the Teesside University’s launchpad programme, which included assistance with trade mark and design registrations, IP ownership agreements and licensing. Other noteworthy individuals include data protection expert Judy Baker and litigators Tim Toomey, Robert Glassford and Peter Hornsey. Motac Neuroscience and the Pacifica Group are also clients.
