Position

Ben has expertise in prosecuting and defending complex criminal cases, particularly murder, fraud, and organised crime conspiracies, serious sexual offences, and serious violence, including attempted murder as junior alone. His regulatory practice covers environmental law, health & safety, food, fire and product safety, and trading standards.

His notable recent criminal cases include: R v TB – junior counsel for the main defendant in a double shooting relying on painstaking analysis of CCTV evidence, in the absence of eye-witnesses (ongoing); Op Cascade – junior Crown counsel in a ‘historical’ institutional child abuse prosecution, spanning decades, with over a dozen defendants, following from successful prosecution of others; R v TC – privately-instructed junior counsel for a financier and property developer in a large-scale real estate fraud (ongoing); R v RT – junior alone in conspiracy to rob targeting prostitutes with extreme violence and reliant on cell-site and forensic evidence; R v George & others – junior Crown counsel in a 13-defendant case of immigration fraud; R v King – pagan ritual murder where deceased’s headless skeleton found 3 years after disappearance, financial motive.

Reported cases include: Brewster [2011] 1 WLR 601 (leading case on non-defendant’s bad character, arising from kidnapping by drug-dealers of rival’s girlfriend, who had manslaughter conviction).

Currently working pro bono on a potential appeal against historic convictions for conspiracy to murder WWI prime minister, David Lloyd George.
