Career

Sam van Velze is associate at bureau Brandeis. She specializes in information law, particularly copyright, media and trademark law. Litigation and advising start-ups and established companies are part of Sam van Velze’s daily practice.

In 2015, Sam van Velze obtained her Research Master’s degree Information Law at the the Institute for Information Law (IViR) and the University of Amsterdam (UvA). During her Master studies, she focused on all legal aspects of the information society. Her interest particularly goes out to the application of law on the Internet and new digital issues.

Her thesis “Communication to a New Public, A Critical Analysis of the CJEU’s new public criterion in EU copyright law” has been awarded a nine out of ten and won the Internet Thesis Prize 2016 for best thesis in the field of Internet and law.

During her studies Sam van Velze studied a semester at the University of Toronto in Canada and the University of Copenhagen in Denmark. In addition to her work at bureau Brandeis, Sam van Velze is founder of the IViR Alumni Group and organizes annual meetings for all former students of the IViR.

Sam van Velze publishes articles on copyright, in particular the right of communication to the public, in both Dutch and international scientific journals. With her Dutch article “Het ‘nieuw publiek’ criterium hoort niet thuis in het Europese mededelingsrecht”, she won the VIE-prize 2017. This prize is awarded each year by the Association for Intellectual Property (AIPPI) for best publication in the field of intellectual property and competition law.

Sam van Velze has been a member of the Dutch Bar since July 2016.
