Career

Sam MacMahon Baldwin is a seasoned EU & competition law practitioner with extensive expertise in advising businesses on all EU & antitrust matters.

Within antitrust, he advises on how to navigate the rules on anti-competitive agreements, abuse of dominance, merger control, and State aid. He is regularly instructed in economics heavy antitrust matters including pricing abuse cases and in-depth merger investigations.

As an expert in EU law, he advises businesses on investment protection under the EU’s Internal Market freedoms, i.e. Freedom of establishment, Freedom to provide services, and Free movement of goods & capital. He also advises on EU law aspects of labour & employment law.

He has impressive track-record of advocacy experience before national competition authorities and the European Commission including in high profile antitrust, merger, State aid, and Internal Market cases. He has represented companies in national court proceedings as well as at the EU courts in Luxembourg; e.g. case C-255/16, Falbert and T-65/06 & C-238/12 P, FLSmidth. Most recently, he formed part of the team representing DAF Trucks in case C-451/18, Tibor Trans.

He is recognised by Global Competition Review and Who’s Who Legal as a leading individual in competition law. Since 2020, the European Commission has selected him to serve as Non-Governmental Advisor to the EU’s antitrust enforcer, DG Competition, for the International Competition Network.

He is the founder of the network Young Competition Law Professionals and member of the panel of permanent & featured blog contributors at Kluwer Competition Law Blog where he regularly blogs about topical issues and new tendencies within EU antitrust.

He is native in English as well as Danish.

Pan-European mandates make up a significant portion of the competition team’s caseload at Szecskay Attorneys at Law; the practice has a strong track record in cross-border merger control filings and represents clients in both national and international courts, including the CJEU. Practice head Anikó Keller regularly represents clients before the HCA in cartel investigations and other competition infringement cases, alongside János Vajda, who regularly acts in cartel appeals. Sam MacMahon Baldwin brings a ‘highly knowledgeable’ approach to a breadth of antitrust cases, and Miklós Boronkay regularly takes a lead role in follow-on damages litigation.
