Position

Catriona is a partner in the healthcare, public and regulatory team. Specialist areas of work are public sector with particular emphasis on health and social care public bodies, such as the Mental Welfare Commission for Scotland and the Parole Board for Scotland. Also acts for professional regulators such as the General Medical Council, General Dental Council and General Teaching Council for Scotland, among many others. She has a specialist medical negligence practice and has obtained millions of pounds of damages for families in obstetric negligence cases in 2014. The combination of the above work also places her firmly in the civil liberties and human rights field, and she is regularly involved in judicial review cases involving public bodies.

Trained Anderson Strathern; qualified 2002. Principally involved in specialist advice to public bodies and engaged in litigation in civil claims and appearances before a wide variety of tribunals and committees. Previous career as a journalist. Made partner at Anderson Strathern in 2013.

Anderson Strathern's clients include universities, colleges and schools, for which it handles safeguarding, governance and regulatory work, in addition to peripheral matters such as employment, procurement and construction. The group acts as the external solicitors for the General Teaching Council for Scotland, which it advises on the spectrum of regulatory and disciplinary issues. Practice head Alun Thomas has niche expertise in education-related contentious work, particularly in the area of student contract disputes; he is assisting Perth College with a review following a critical tribunal decision relating to an aggrieved former employee. Fiona Killen stands out for having ‘a strong grasp’ of regulatory and legislative detail, as well as in the management of relations between the higher education sector and government, when changes to internal legislation are being considered. Highlights for Catriona Watt included representing two independent schools in relation to allegations of historic abuse being investigated by the Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry.
