Communications Industry Faces Year 2000 Challenge

United StatesMedia, Telecoms, IT, Entertainment

By David M. Nadler

The millennium 2000 (Y2K) crisis, has become a huge concern to large and small businesses around the globe. This "bug" refers to the use of two digits rather than four to represent the year in dates in many computer software programs and some hardware with embedded software. The major concern is that these systems will read "00" as "1900" rather than "2000."

Representing the manufacturers and distributors of business communications solutions, MMTA's Voice/MultiMedia Division and Government Relations Committee have created a white paper, The Year 2000 Problem -- A Primer for the Telecommunications Industry, to provide companies with information on how to address customer concerns regarding the Y2K crisis. As the FCC gets active on the issue, MMTA's white paper will provide some assurance that the industry is working to protect consumers.
