Every university, college or educational institution that operates a broadcast station must renew its federal broadcasting license. Failure to file a license renewal application on time may cause significant regulatory problems, including possible loss of license.

The current broadcast station license renewal cycle started in 2011 and involves several new requirements, including new certifications with respect to advertising nondiscrimination and periods of reduced or silent operations. In addition, just-announced FCC requirements for television stations' public files, including an online public file, may affect stations as they prepare renewal applications.
