Electronic Filings

United StatesCorporate/Commercial Law

On October 27, 2000, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office initiated full implementation of its Electronic Patent application filing System (EFS). EFS allows anyone to file an application for a new invention with the USPTO by using the Internet. The use of EFS is completely voluntary for new utility patent applications filings. EFS allows utility applications to be filed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Applicants immediately receive an electronic Acknowledgement Receipt upon a successful filing that includes a USPTO assigned application serial number and a date. This receipt is by electronic "postcard." Any electronic submission is automatically validated for completeness against USPTO business rules, thus saving time and effort caused by filing of incomplete applications.
