Weekly Tax Briefing

reported last year that the Inland Revenue had hardened its line on staff entertainment. Many businesses used to disallow legitimate staff entertainment expenses in the employer’s Case I or Case II computation as an alternative to reporting them on the individual employees’ P11Ds. The Revenue announced last year that this practice was not acceptable under Self Assessment and should be discontinued.

The Revenue states bluntly in the February 2000 Tax Bulletin: ‘Where the practice still exists it should not be adopted for accounting periods ending after 30 April 2000.’ The Revenue therefore expects companies with calendar year-ends to terminate this practice forthwith.
