Google ha recentemente lanciato il cosiddetto "Open Patent Non-Assertion Pledge" ("OPN Pledge"), un nuovo sistema che consentirà accesso gratuito a determinate tecnologie già brevettate per coloro che intendano sviluppare progetti open source a partire dalle stesse (i "Beneficiari"). L'iniziativa, sviluppata da Google al dichiarato fine di limitare le minacce brevettuali ai software open source, consiste in un impegno unilaterale e automaticamente efficace con cui il colosso di Mountain View rinuncia a far valere i propri diritti su un elenco circoscritto di brevetti ("Pledged Patents") destinato ad essere costantemente aggiornato online (http://www.google.com/patents/opnpledge/patents/).
