EU: Bulgaria and Romania to partially join Schengen area in March 2024

With effect from March 31, 2024, Bulgaria and Romania will partially join the European Schengen area. At the same time, border controls on air and sea traffic between Bulgaria, Romania and other countries in the Schengen area will be abolished, making air and sea traffic easier and faster, as the travelers concerned will no longer have to be checked at the borders.

For the time being, however, border controls on land travel between Bulgaria or Romania and other countries in the Schengen area will remain in place.

OUTLOOK: In the current year 2024, the European Council will continue talks on lifting land border controls with Bulgaria and Romania. However, no date has yet been set for a further vote on this issue.
