Federal Government activates protection status for refugees from Ukraine

Since February 24, 2022, more than two million people have fled Ukraine due to Russia's invasion. To provide protection to the refugees in an unbureaucratic and timely manner, the Swiss federal government activated protection status S on March 12, 2022 for the first time. Protection status S allows for the collective protection of a specific group of people during a serious threat (e.g. war).

In addition to Ukrainian nationals and their family members, third-country nationals who have fled Ukraine because of the war are also granted protection status S. Here, it is assumed that the persons had a legal residence title for Ukraine before they fled and can no longer return to their home country permanently and safely.
