On February 5, 2016, the Government of Canada amended its economic sanctions on Iran to significantly ease restrictions on doing business. The changes were in response to Iran's compliance with its the commitments to restrict its nuclear proliferation activities under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action with the P5+1 countries and the consequential easing of UN Security Council sanctions and economic sanctions imposed by the EU, the United States and other countries. The changes to Canada's sanctions are designed to allow for what the government called a "controlled economic re-engagement" with Iran. The changes significantly ease the legal constraints on doing business with Iran. However, certain important restrictions remain that can serve as traps for the unwary.
