Au terme des Jeux olympiques de Rio 2016, le Canada aura remporté 22 médailles, égalant ainsi son record établi aux Jeux olympiques d'Atlanta non boycottés de 1996. Cet événement universel et rassembleur se veut non seulement un événement sportif, mais également un important phénomène culturel, économique, de divertissement et de marketing. En effet, pendant que le monde entier aura été témoin d'exploits de tous genres par les athlètes, le Comité International Olympique, lui, avait les yeux rivés sur la potentielle utilisation illégale de sa propriété intellectuelle.
