À la suite de la signature officielle de l'Accord Canada–États-Unis–Mexique (ACEUM) lors du Sommet des dirigeants du G20 à Buenos Aires en novembre 2018, le nouvel accord est entré en vigueur le 1er juillet 2020. L'ACEUM remplace désormais l'Accord de libre-échange nord-américain qui était en place depuis 1994. À l'époque, l'ALENA créait la plus grande région de libre-échange au monde et façonnait les activités commerciales sur le continent.

L'impact considérable de l'ACEUM se fera sentir dans de nombreux domaines d'activité commerciale et sa mise en Suvre prendra du temps. Dans le domaine de la propriété intellectuelle, ses effets sont déjà perceptibles.
