As we reported in the November 2007 edition of the Privacy Update, submissions in response to the Australian Law Reform Commission's 'Review of Privacy' closed on 7 December 2007. According to the ALRC website at the time of issue of this edition, the ALRC's final report and recommendations were due to be delivered to the Attorney-General on or before 31 March 2008.
At the APEC Privacy Pathfinder Seminar held in Sydney on 6 February 2008, Professor Les McCrimmon (Commissioner, ALRC) informed attendees that the ALRC is unable to deliver its final report to the Attorney General by 31 March 2008, as planned. The delay, as explained by Commissioner McCrimmon, is due to the ALRC's late receipt of a submission from an important government stakeholder, which was held up by reason of the care-taker period associated with the recent Federal election.
The ALRC's website now indicates that the final report and recommendations are due to be delivered by 31 May 2008.
